Steinhatchee scalloping

Wasn't sure exactly what forum would be best to post a Steinhatchee question (the Steinhatchee forum doesn't seem very active) so I'm trying Cedar Key hoping that someone might be able to provide insight into scalloping. I would love to take my kids scalloping this summer and found a lovely place to stay in Steinhatchee, the problem is it seems all of the scalloping charters I find are around $300 (out of our price range). My question is, can we just scallop on our own? Do we need a guide? Is it possible to get to the scallops without a boat or just by renting a kayak? or does anyone know a guide that is less expensive?

You posted on the Siesta Key forum...here is some info on scalloping. Season starts July 1.

You can contact some charter captains up there about possibly splitting a charter.

Oh, oops, thanks for the reply. I will try re-posting in Cedar Key.

If you have access to a boat, you can dry dock at the sea hag in Steinhatchee. Call ahead- they stay busy during the season. Also, you can go in your own- you don't need a guide-just a salt water fishing lisense.
