Memorial Weekend - what to expect

Hi all,

We're travelling to Siesta Key for our first visit on the Sunday of Memorial weekend. We're from the UK so we're not really sure what to expect over this weekend as we've never been to the states before during this time. Will the beaches and bar/restaurants be crowded on the Sunday and Monday? Will we have to book if we decide to eat out? Will everything be open - in the UK a lot of businesses shut down on public holiday days? Will these day be best to stay on the local beaches or travel around?

Lots of questions - hope you can answer some for thhe uninformed!!

Thanks

This is the first "official weekend" of summer. That means the locals are out in force, on the beaches and at the restaurants. Almost nothing shuts down (except things like libraries, trash collection, etc.) for Monday. Most of the winter residents are long gone by then, and the summer family invasion is a couple of weeks off, so will really not be terribly crowded. Biggest problem is driving around. Walk to places, make reservations if you can, relax and have fun. Nice time of year, actually, as it's usually not terribly hot and humid yet, but the water is warm.

Memorial Day is usually when the last of the part time winter residents leave for the summer.

It won't be terribly crowded. Florida residents who don't live by the beach usually head for places like Siesta/Sarasota.

It could be hot when compared to London temperatures. Should be a nice time to visit!

Thanks for the replies. It sounds to me like on that weekend we'll get there and get settled and take a stroll to the various beaches. Do any of the beaches have any shade for those of us of the fair skinned variety who may need to escape the sun for a few hours?? Either umbrella hire or palm trees, etc.

Also I heard mentioned on here that you can snorkel at the point of rocks. What's everyones experience of this - suitable for kids aged 11 to get a chance to see some fish?

Thanks again

The best snorkeling is at Point of Rocks.
