Beach hotel near restaurants and shopping

We are looking to stay somewhere on the west coast of Florida that resembles the downtown beach feel of Fort Lauderdale with the ability to walk or do a very short drive to shopping and restaurants. 2 adults with 2 kids under age of 4. Is Sarasota, Lido Beach, Siesta Keys or Fort Myers beach the best place for that?

We went to Marco Island a few months back and it was to remote for our taste. Thanks!

Siesta Key has no full service hotels. There are some motel type and there is the Hyatt SK beach club. Most of the rest are rentals.

There is a free trolley now to get around the island.
