We will be camping at Highland Hammocks State Park next month for the second time. What else is there to do in area with kids ages 7 through 11?

Thanks!

Not much to do in Sebring. How far do you want to drive?

I know this post is old, but for others who may be looking...

Sebring is a small town, so you won't find a lot of pre-packaged city type activities, but if you look there is plenty to do!

Here is a page of family activities:

www.sebring-florida.com/familyfun.shtml

Here's another page of local links:

geocities.com/momsclubpage/locallinks.html

Here is a calendar of events:

centralfloridasearch.com/annualevents.shtml

Here's another list (sift through the local meetings for events):

sebringflchamber.com/…20Events.htm

You are going to be at Highlands Hammock, so you know about that. There is a children's museum downtown, but your kids are probably getting a little old for it (the 11 y.o. anyway). There is a part of the Florida National Scenic Trail called Hickory Hammock here: …away.com/gorp/location/fl/ww_orlando5.htm

also ck here: http://www.florida-trail.org/

You can see what performances are going on at our little theatre:

http://www.highlandslittletheatre.org/

You can pick strawberries and other seasonals and get wine at Henscratch Farms:

www.henscratchfarms.com/upickseasons.html

You can get an airboat ride on Lake Istokpoga, ask around, ck phone book or look here: homestead.com/friendsofistokpoga/files/Assoc…

We went once and they guy was really great, he taught us alot about the lake, environmental status of it, nature, etc. ... and there are lots of gators, birds and fish.

You may also be able to find boat rentals on that page... we have lots of lakes to enjoy. See if you can rent a boat (swimming, skiing, etc. on Lake Jackson in Sebring and Lakes June and Placid in the town of Lake Placid); fishing, kayaking, etc. in other lakes. Arbuckle Creek, which spills into Lake Istokpoga is an great place to kayak, really pretty:

http://www.kayakguide.com/Arbuckle.htm

There are a couple of public "beaches" on Lake Jackson in Sebring (Veteran's beach is closest to the Hammock park but I like Pier Beach downtown better, plus it has a playground, the pier, the library and art museums on the property; plus walking distance to the circle downtown with shops and a coffee house with wi-fi and weekend entertainment:

http://www.javajunctionsebring.com

There are also a bunch of caches around here (including at least 2 or 3 in the Hammock, plus others in the area) if you are into Geocaching (our kids love going "treasure hunting" as they call it):

http://www.geocaching.com/

If you are into nature study, the Archbold Biological Station is in Lake Placid:

archbold-station.org/abs/…grouptour.htm

They also have an astronomy program:

archbold-station.org/abs/…Kyes-skies.htm

If you are into car racing, you can see if there are races happening at the airport racetrack (there is a nice hotel there where you can get a drink or eat, too; your boys might like to watch the racecars... they are out there a good bit, there are also stunt planes out at certain times of the year too):

Chateau Elan Hotel: http://www.chateauelansebring.com/

Sebring Raceway:

http://www.sebringraceway.com/

There is also a cafe at the airport:

Runway Cafe: http://www.sebring-airport.com/Cafe.html

There are numerous golf courses if you are into that.

Of course, we also have regular stuff like going to the mall, movies, bowling, etc.

I have to run but there are some ideas for you! It's definitely a slower pace here, but plenty to do. :) Have fun!

ok, now this post is REALLY ancient...

but once again, for anyone who may read it.

it's not a far drive to Lake Wales & the Bok Tower & Gardens. BEAUTIFUL place! and the carillon music is lovely.

(used to love taking my dog for hikes at highland hammocks, what a cool place! it was only a few minutes from my parents' house)

I'd say the lakes (especially in Lake Placid) are the main attraction. Water skiing, fishing, boating, PWCs, etc.

http://www.homedt.com/rec1.cfm

has a LOT of area information (recreation, etc.)
