The latest comments from the computer models on Wunderground and from Jeff Masters' blog on Wunderground suggest that Ernesto is heading towards the Western Caribbean, maybe Belize. It could spin off a little rain for us next week though, and obviously it could also change direction. Apparently there's also another "disturbance" out there in the Atlantic that "could" develop and come across the State sometime next week. But all of those projections are equally very iffy, maybe, could, potentially, etc. No one is even beginning to talk serious storm talk around here. Could it change? Sure. But for now we're all going about our normal business. Aware of a possible storm, yes; worried about something serious coming next week, no. That's called life in Southwest Florida during hurricane season.

Weather underground does a fine job of presenting the National Weather Service's information plus some extras. If Ernesto enters the Gulf as a hurricane, it's likely to cause high surf, if nothing else (the very gently sloping topography offshore from the Sarasota area places severe limits on wave height. By contrast, swells coming from precisely the right direction can, rarely, cause huge surf at Palm Beach because there's essentially no continental shelf).

The tropical wave that's affecting southern Florida right now has already caused torrential rain in the West Palm Beach urban area.

This is the page you want. Ernesto isn't supposed to be a problem at this point, but keep an eye on it here:

What is funny is that often the folks who ask about storms, etc. have no clue of geography, history, or storm patterns. I really loved the one recently who asked if the oil had been cleaned up. The spill was 2 years ago, and never came within 500 miles of here. Enough said!
