red tide

Our family is planning a trip to the Sarasota/Bradenton area in a few weeks. We hear there is a red tide condition on the beaches at this time which results in burning eyes and smelly beaches. Is this the case? We are tentively scheduled to be at the Lido Beach Resort, but if we can't use the beach, maybe we should stay elsewhere. Would appreciate any information on what to expect.

Thanks.
