Hi Mary,

Red Tide is a naturally occurring algal bloom. The bloom can move up and down the beaches depending upon tides and winds. It is hard to predict which days it will be a problem on the Island, if it presents any problem at all.

While it is not easy to predict, here is a link that will give you up to date information on any areas currently affected with red tide:

http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/hab/#swfl

If you do happen to visit during a period of Red Tide bloom, you might not even notice it's there. Red Tide can be present on one beach on the Island and show no trace of it on another beach.

Unless you are traveling with elderly folks or people with asthma and chronic breathing issues, I would not be too worried about Red Tide.

My son also has asthma and uses an inhaler. We were actually on Island a few years ago in the summer when there was a bad red tide. The bloom was mostly concentrated on the bayside of the Island with very little signs of it on the gulf side. (we were on Captiva ) He had no problems at all and we were able to enjoy our trip without incident.

I hope you have a wonderful, bloom free time!

If you just go to Weather.com you will see if a 'Beach Hazard' warning has been issued near the time of your stay. NOAA issues them and they appear in an kind of gold bar for Special Weather Statements just above the current conditions. It does not give exact locations, just general ones as the blooms tend to move. At the moment, it seems to be a bayside issue in parts of various harbors and sounds from Lee County north.

Red tide isn't predictable. It can come and then disappear overnight. No way to even guess what things will be like in a few weeks.
