Red Tide

Hi,

My family and I will be in Sanibel in late April. Should we be worried about Red Tide? This is our first time traveling to Sanibel in April, normally we go in May. Please let me know what you think!

Thank you!

As it's a naturally occuring phenomenon nobody will be able to advise on this subject so far in advance.

Here's a very helpful link with phone #'s and answers to FAQ's

Yes, there are some warnings up under a special weather statement on weather.com. Mostly bayside. Still nothing in local news.

Local news is not reporting on the Red Tide except for the odd reference in the weekly "fishing column" or the like. This is high season. The presence of the Red Tide is measured in four ways; water samples that are taken once or twice per week; remote satellite sensing that looks for anomalies in chlorophyll levels; volunteer observers who look for dead fish on the beach and listen for coughing; and members of the public who call in to report dead fish or respiratory symptoms. The impact of the Red Tide is dependent on a number of things including: the algae count, the location of the bloom (along shore, off shore or in the bays); very importantly the wind direction. This is a major HAB (harmful algal bloom) or Red Tide event that has been going on since October and stretches from Sarasota to Marco with varying levels of intensity. It is amazing to me that they are not taking samples every day. What has helped to mitigate the effects of this event in some locations is wind direction. This season there have been very few days with a strong on shore flow ie from the North West.

This site, which I posted before has many good links and maps http://bitly.com/wClIyc . I would also recommend you check out this link that I found on that site …noaa.gov/website/AGSViewers/HABSOS/maps.htm

I'm a Red Tide barometer and have been coughing since I arrived two days ago. Not as bad as in Sarasota 5 years ago but it is an annoyance.

CCTraveler....Sorry it is causing you some distress....never fun on vacation. As a counterpoint, I will say that here on the West End since Sat afternoon, there are no more dead fish than usual, (minimal), nor have any of our party experienced respiratory symptoms. I believe this goes to show that the previous comments regarding the sporadic and unpredictable nature of any red tide effects are accurate.

My understanding is that the predominate affected area is bayside a/o/t gulf side, and spotty at best.

Whatever the situation is now with red tide will almost certainly not be what it is in late April. Relax and forget about all the things you can't control.
