Beach Cottage-Clean

I am flying into Tampa, first week in march, usually go to Venice-Turtle Beach..Love it! We want to try something new, hubby is high school principal, needs a rest. I have picked Sanibel, now I am searching for a cottage within walking to the beach for shells. Can anyone help. I have 7 days, thinking of staying at Englewood on my way back to tampa airport heard it was nice. Should I divide my time or stay at one place longer?? Help Iowa Travelers

If you (or hubby) are in need of some serious R&R, Sanibel is the right place to be and since the majority of rentals are at least for a week, why not plan on spending all your time there?! If a condo would do, the Ocean's Reach complex is beautifully situated on the beach and ALL units have recently been totally restored following the hurricanes of 2004.

A listing for White Caps Cottages on the vacation rentals by owner site: www.vrbo.com

comes highly recommended by one of the quite knowledgeable posters on this forum (I noticed you did say cottage!)

Finally, you may have to resort to using one of the accommodation specialists on the island as March is likely to be quite well booked by now. A few of those are Sanibel Accommodations, VIP Realty, ResortQuest. You may also look at www.sanibel-captiva.org as an additional resource.

Good luck in your search.

Here's a link to an association of small inns and cottages on Sanibel. I just returned from a week in a condo on the East end of Sanibel and in my walks around that part of the island noticed a number of interesting looking cottage colonies, so I looked them up when I got back and found this website. The first 4 or so on this list were among the ones I'd noticed, and I believe they are all within walking distance of the beach.

Raven: Try Waterside Inn on the Beach, great little clean cottages right on the beach! Their website is www.watersideinn.net.....

Nothing much in Englewood. I spend the week on Sanibel. More to do on a nice compact island. You may be hard put to find a cottage the first week of March as it is the annual Sanibel Shell Show, a very popular event.

Most cottages are simple and clean. I addition to the Waterside, check Mitchell's Sand Castle, Forty Fifteen, Castaways, Shalimar, and others. Off the beach, but within an easy walk, Tarpon Tale, Buttonwood, Parrot's Nest, Seahorse Cottages and others. See www.sanibel-captiva.org Click on Where to Say and then Motels and Cottages.

The Anchor Inn and Kona Kai are not within walking distance of the beach, but are inexpensive and clean.

Thank you for the advice, I have been reading reviews for a week, the waterside Inn looks nice but a review said it needed updated and some did not like it. I am going by reviews! I can't decide which end of sanibel, I will want to be on, can't tell by the pictures on-line. I will be walking to the beach and food places. I do want to canoe.

This is very helpful, I went to daytona beach over thanksgiving, Hawaiian Inn, it was 150.00 a night looked great on-line but had live roaches and was filthy, we had a bad experience on our arrival, hubby is High School principal needing a rest during spring break 3/8, I am looking for a clean on the beach cottage, I stayed at turtle beach Inn near venice over christmas break, it was wonderful, had private hot tubs, free canoes, I am hoping to find a nice place on sanibel or captiva, which ever I see the best reviews!

I am looking for palms, flowers and exotic, romantic, quiet, I see places on-line but, can't tell by the pictures....please help

Thanks for all of your help, you are great! It is cold here in Iowa, can't wait..

I noticed on the reviews for the castaways, they have a picture of a girls legs that has bug bites all over them from their room they said, yet others loved the place, please help.

No-see-ums will eat you alive, eapecially your legs. While it could be something else, I have been COVERED with bites when I got careless. And a friend of mine wore shorts and did not listen to my warnings about the little buggers and she too was miserable with hundreds of bites that covered her legs. Unfortunately, they come with the territory. It's FL. It's buggy.

Castaways is basic and clean and on the sand. Most places I've been in have a can of Raid handy. I use it. Every island I've been on has problems like this - even in multi-million dollar homes. If it's dirty, get management. Things often smell 'musty', especially if closed up for for a time, due to the high humidity.

I will say this, since Charley it seems many places have not re-staffed to pre-Charley days. And I have found housekeeping all over the US and Canada, even at 5* properties, is not what it used to be.

I have our stay down to these choices, Tween waters, sounds nice, I think I can have a golf side or bay side room. I want to canoe and yet be on the gulf side on the beach, I want to be near food places, I think captiva sounds better than sanibel. I am interested in the hurricane damage...I was thinking about seaside Inn or Island Inn, westwind Inn, Tarpon Tale. I wish I could see these before booking a stay.

Since you need access to both the gulf and the bay, Captiva sounds good, as does the east end of Sanibel. I have not stayed at Tween Waters, but it sure looked good when I drove by last week, and I have noted it as a possibility for a future trip. Although it isn't right in the center of Captiva, you are still quite close to the Captiva restaurants, store, shops, etc.

Of the other places you most recently mentioned, I know the Tarpon Tale and the Seaside Inn are both on the east end. The Tarpon Tale is right across the street from a small market and a well-regarded restaurant (the Lighthouse Cafe). There is also a deli down the street. The Tarpon Tale is on a corner that's somewhat busy during the day, so you might want to check the reviews to see if anyone has said anything about noise. I don't know whether the Tarpon Tale is considered directly on the beach.

The Seaside Inn is not far away and is another one of the old-style properties that looks interesting. It is on the beach.

The other properties you mention sound more like they're in the middle or west end of Sanibel. Hopefully others will advise on these.

Regarding the negative review you mentioned earlier, I would always be inclined to take the best and worst reviews with a grain of salt. Actually, I might toss them out, and concentrate on the stuff in the middle.

However, I also realize that not all properties on Sanibel/Captiva have been extensively reviewed, so you don't always have a lot to base your decision on.

Also, as a previous poster said, there will always be bugs and a certain amount of dirt and mustiness in an area like this, especially in a ground level cottage -- imagine what it must have been like for the original settlers in the days before air conditioning, screens, and Florida Swamp insect repellent!
