Beach area with free parking?

Are there any beach areas on Sanibel with free parking close by? We are not staying on the island but would like to spend a day there.....breakfast, beach, and then dinner. We don't know where the public beaches are or where to park. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Unless you are tooling around the Island on a Bike or walking, you will have to pay to park at all Sanibel public beaches.

Here's a map with information about each beach. There are 5 public parking beaches. Those that have "restricted parking" beside them are for residents with permits only. You can still use those beaches, you just can't park a car there.

There is also no parking allowed on the street and Sanibel really enforces the parking rules. Since parking at the beaches that have public lots is $2 an hour, another option would be to park for free by Fenimore's Bikes, rent bikes from them & bike to the beach. Could do the same thing at Billy's Bikes, but I don't think there is parking available there. The beach with the largest parking lot by far is Bowman's Beach.

Which one of the public beach parking lots is closest to the beach? Thanks.

Lighthouse would be the closest; Algiers is very close; Blind Pass next, then south end of Tarpon Bay Road, then Bowman's Beach. None of them are very far. Bowman's has the most parking available & also has the most facilities.

There's one alternative, although it's not really the same as a beach ON Sanibel. The causeway beaches do not have a parking fee. You just drive right onto the beach. You could bring a picnic with you for breakfast and lunch and then drive onto the island for dinner. Just an option!

I think we are planning on going to the beach by the Lighthouse, but I'm curious, what are the causeway beaches? Where exactly? I'm not all that familiar with the area. Thanks for the suggestion.

Check out the following site for some photos of the causeway, showing the beaches etc.etc

This was during the bridge constuction and everything associated with it in 2007

the causeway beaches are actually nice. Free parking, just pull up and park almost wherever you want, there are public restrooms, some picnic tables, shade in spots, palm trees. It does get crowded there on the weekends....but lots of areas to choose from on the causeway.

The Causeway beaches refers to the little islands that connect the bridges to get onto Sanibel. You must pay the toll to get on the bridges, but there are small islands connecting the bridges. As mentioned, there is no parking charge on them, however, you will be on the bayside of Sanibel, rather than the Gulf side and there will be fewer shells. They are also good alternatives for watching a sunset if you can't get into the Blindpass parking lot!
