Best beach for shells

On our recent visit, we found that shells were more abundant on Sanibel than on Captiva. Is that typical?

From what I've heard, Sanibel is the best beach for shelling in the entire state.

Sanibel is typically better than Captiva for shelling. The reason is that Sanibel sticks out like a smile into the gulf and catches all the shells. Captiva is a north/south direction so it does not get as many. However Captiva does get some great shells, it all depends too on the tides and currents, and weather.

Yes, it is typical -- people assume because they are together they are the same, but it is Sanibel that is known for shells, not Captiva.

In many places in Captiva, you don't have the sand bars to slow down the tides, so the shells seem to get smashed rather than making it to shore intact the way they do on Sanibel. Also for that reason, I prefer the water on Sanibel, shallow and calm.
