We have decided to attend a family reunion/wedding on St Pete's Beach in July. We would love a vacation rental, but it looks like most are too far for an easy walk with a 4 yr old. We are a cycling family and think we could make the vacation rental work if we have bikes + a child trailer to move around the area. Is this remotely possible? Any locals willing to help us out?

Hello from a Canadian expat living on St. Pete Beach. There is only one guy here named Pete, so we cringe when visitors call it St. Petes. Many families use bikes to get around here, I ride 10 miles a day around our island. There are two places that I know of where you may rent bikes. First are 3G fat tire premium beach cruisers available at Finish Line Scooters on Gulf Blvd. The second is the Merry Pier bait shop on Pass-a-Grille Way has older beach bikes for rent.

There will be an issue getting a child trailer here. They are not as commonly seen on our roads, probably due to the volume of traffic and the narrowness of our bike lanes and the bumpiness of our normal rides. I see folks using the child trailers to move their dogs around. I do not know of any places that rent them. My kid is a teenager, so we long since chucked our trailer, and I'm afraid I do not know any families that still have one.

There is a network of "free-beach-ride" operators which operate a version of an unlicensed taxi. There rates are very reasonable and many locals and visitors alike use then. This includes children using them to get to school. They might be able to solve you general transport issues. Note that July is very warm. Some might find it a challenge to do robust activity outside mid day until they have become a climatized.

Our island is a wonderful place to enjoy a family Holiday with little ones. Have a great visit!
