" will I be able to enjoy (i.e. wade around in) the water there at the beach,"

Absolutely.

"and if it's worth it to stay oceanfront or not."

How do you define "worth it"?

Direct oceanfront lodging will cost more, but you will have superior views. Is this important to you?

The water is pretty warm in May..average ocean temperature is 75...but could be warmer. See this site for current temps http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/dsdt/cwtg/satl.html

For other information on St Augustine you could check out http://localsguidesa.com/

As for oceanfront...remember...you can drive on the beach here and access for walking is great too.

Hello RLC,

May is a wonderful month in Saint Augustine! People start going to the beach in droves in April. 75 is a great temperature for the water. To put that in perspective, the ocean temperature in Southern California never gets that warm. (72 is about as warm as the water ever gets there, and then only for a few days.) Bring shorts to wear in town. We're real casual down here.

Since you live a long way from the ocean, I suggest that you stay at the beach while you are here.

Enjoy your visit!

Spirit

As a supplement to the historical temperature table presented above, see this map for current water temperatures across the world -- interesting because it shows how currents impact various areas:

http://www.wunderground.com/MAR/

You can click on portions of the map for more detailed views.

In Florida, the water temperatures in February are typically the lowest of the year, but still much warmer than many other areas. Yesterday, February 17, the beaches here in Cocoa Beach were crowded for President's Day and many people (mostly surfers and tourists, as locals think the water seems chilly) were in the water, which was in the 68-70 degree range. Water temperatures will then start increasing into May and beyond; by mid-summer and into early fall, the water will be almost like bathwater here in Cocoa Beach and many other areas of Florida.

Beyond the water temperature, consider the soothing sound of the surf breaking on the each. We like to leave our windows open to listen to the pounding waves as we fall asleep -- very relaxing if you have a room right on the beach.

I visit St. Augustine annually usually the last week of April or 1st week of May. The water is fine and very rare the weather doesn't cooperate. Enjoy!!!

The water will be fine in May. Beautiful time of the year there. If staying for a week, try renting a condo (Ocean Gallery is nicely maintained). If you're there for a shorter stay, try the Hampton Inn on the beach; reasonable, clean and a nice complimentary continental breakfast.
