Where to stay

I will be traveling to St Augustine mid October, can anyone suggest a good place for a couple of 40 somethings that like to chill, bar hop, shop a little and partake in some good food? It would be ideal to stay at a place where we can just meander out of the hotel and explore, keeping driving to a minimum (we will be bar hopping after all). I've seen some posts that suggest what look like good places, but wanted to put it out there again to make sure I've covered all bases, thanks!

Old City House has a great location just off the plaza in the historic district AND excellent breakfasts (included). http://oldcityhouse.com/

I was just looking at that one, but then I Google mapped it at street level and it's covered, I mean literally covered, with a huge green and yellow tarp with a big Terminex sign and dangerous poison sign, kind of alarming. Any other suggestions?

I suppose I should feel good about the fact that whatever was in there has been exterminated, maybe...

Sorry - Vic was posting while I was.

Tarps are only used for termites and are preventive - no problem.

I should add that I'm looking for something quaint and unique, like Old City House, just not something that has required a full extermination recently :-)...

Had to laugh at your post because I saw the tent covering Old City House on Google yesterday and thought the same thing you did!

We've only stayed at the Bayfront Westcott House and I would absolutely stay there again. It's location is perfect for wandering, but out of the way enough for a little peace & quiet when you want it. Westcott house and Bayfront Marin House are close to places like Cellar 6 on Aviles St and JP Henley's on Marine St, which might suit your bar hopping. : ) However, you'll be close to everything really, as the historic district is quite compact.

Don't know the Wescott House but the location is spectacular!

Walk three blocks north along the battery to the downstairs bar at A1A Ale Works which is one of my favorite bars in town. Upstairs is a great restaurant with another small bar. Go by and book a table on the terrace for one of the best views in the city. DO NOT go to the Santa Maria even though it looks great too.

Edensmom, a hotel draped in a hugemongous tarp can certainly sound the alarm! But I'm going to leave them on my list because ddavis says it's nothing to worry about... I'll definitely add the Bayfront Westscott to my list as well, thanks for the info!

That Google Streetview could have been shot years ago.

Whenever I go to Amsterdam I check out neighborhoods on Streetview and see a lot of construction that is long since finished when I get there.
