Hello, we were there last year. They do fireworks and the main area is by the Castillo downtown. It was very crowded. We stayed in a beach place over the Bridge of Lions so we actually heard that getting back over the bridge after fireworks was a nightmare...we ended up spending the day walking around the downtown and going to the castillo where they had a cannon firing in with people in time period costume. it was pretty cool (but Very Hot!-lol). Anyway, we went to dinner at a restaurant in a historic building (I can get name if you want...good food, Louisiana style) and just drove back to the hotel so we would not get stuck in the traffic. The fireworks weren't going to start till like 9 or 9:30 and we were so hot and tired and the kids were just done, so we were happy just going back. Just be ready to deal with a lot of traffic if you have to cross that bridge afterwards. Hope this helps.

Yes St. Augustine is crowded and hot for the fourth of July but there is a reason - it is absolutely magic! The fireworks display is always fantastic!

If you want to see the fireworks and stay downtown, just walk to the area. If you stay out on the beach, just park your car so you can get headed out of town the back way (out King street) so you can cross the Anastasia Bridge instead of the Bridge of Lions (there will still be traffic but it is worth it).

One of the neatest things if you are up for it is to be on the Bridge of Lions for the fireworks - it gets closed down right before they begin.

Restaurants in the whole area will be crowded - plan to eat meals off-peak or go to restaurants where you can make reservations. If you want further information, just ask.

The restaurant the first responder probably ate at was Harry's.

Does anyone know if you can see the fireworks from the beaches? We are staying at St Augustine Ocean and Racquet Club. Don't want to drive downtown if possible but dont want to miss the show either.

No, unfortunately, you won't be able to see the fireworks from where you're staying. The fireworks are shot off from a barge in the Matanzas Bay by the Castillo De San Marcos (old fort). They can be viewed from the Bridge of Lions which will be closed to traffic during that time. If you park on the East side of the bridge you would be able to return to your lodging relativly easy.

Laura -

There will be an incredible amount of "unofficial" fireworks on the beach in front of your condo especially if its low tide between 9:00 & 9:30.

This link indicates high tide at 6:30 with the tide going out by 9:00 - 9:30:

It was Harry's, D Davis! We did think about parking across the bridge and walking over but even that way we couldn't find a place to park. You have to park it EARLY in day...before lunch I think.

You should stay downtown if you can, the rates are higher because of July 4 though (we've been booked since a month ago) and then you can walk anywhere. if you are staying at the beach, park on the island in the residential area about a block from the bridge. You can then set up lawn chairs on the bridge and get a good view (they close the bridge for the show), then you can hightail it back to your car and be off before the masses!
