First Family trip to Cape San Blas

Hello all,

Wanted to find out a few things about Cape San Blas as we are planning on taking out two children 11 and 6, with the grandparents possibly joining us. Is the air and water temperature comfortable the first week in April usually? Also, are the beach bugs bad at this time of year? Can anyone recommend the closest grocery store prior to reaching Cape san Blas, we are heading in from Illinois? Also, are the waters fairly shallow so kids can wade in them offshore for a little distance, or are there steep dropoffs? We are looking to rent a home listed on vrbo.com, I have always had great results with this website. Any help would be appreciated!

You will love, it, kids will love it, grands will love it.

Air, yes. 70s. nights may or may not still be in 50s.

Water can still be chilly, but that is a preference thing. If your beach is one of the areas where the water entrance is shallow, it will be a little warmer.

The are there, becuase of the density of the forests in some parts of the Cape, but not so bad in early Spring. (much much worse in early Fall). Pack deet spray for when you are walking or sitting on the porch just in case.

In Port Saint Joe, at the marina, is a Piggly Wiggly (meduim sized-not a super store, but larger than an IGA). we like this because it is local, and they have general fishing supplies, groceries, etc.

Out ON the Cape there is the Trading Post, which is $$$ and limited, but handy if you are out there and need one or two things, Also Scallop Cove (another convenience store). If you want a BIG store or Walmart, you'll need to stop in Marianna.

Depends where the house is located. If you want this, you'll want a South facing beach. You can ask the rental agency or owners things like:

"Before Eglin AFB property, before Stump Hole (where road turns North), OR, on Hwy 30, WEST of the Bayou."

Generally the beaches you wnat are within those boundaries. The beaches further out are very pretty, but narrower, and the water entrances are sharper and deeper.

www.thecapeescape.com is a great website of info. They ARE a rental agency, but their local links are full of good info.

This a great vacation spot. The State park is a must. Bring bikes! (or rent them at Scallop Cove) The PSJ marina has a guy...Seahorse Safaris that is great for a charter for snorkeling or a sunset cruise. Very reasonable.

If you are near the Bayou, it is the best spot for crabbing.

For a good restaurant, drive to Apalachicola.

For nightlife...hmm...either fish late, or make sure your rental has a telescope!

Also in Apalach are antique shops, and you can take an estuary tour by airboat.

make memories,

Miller

Thanks so much! We are very excited about going. I have rented a house already, but to be honest I do not know where it is located in comparison to the stump?! I google earthed it and it is approx 3 miles south of St. Joe State Park. Hopefully, I am in the good area! I hope that the weather is a little bit better, and we can tolerate a little colder water as we have been in the Gulf in Jan-Feb. You know us Northerners, "that ain't cold!"
