Grand Panama or Edgewater Beach for familes?????

Our family of four (12 year old and 9 year old) are meeting another family of four with kids the same age in Panama City Beach traveling late July. We want a resort with lots of activities (or near activities) including pools. We want a 2- to 3-bedroom condo that is clean and updated. Would like to keep the budget between $1500 to $2500 for the week. The Grand Panama or Edgewater look like good family resorts. Anyone have experience with these or any other suggestions??? Thanks!

Both of those are family oriented resorts and are located next to eachother, but they are pretty different.

Grand Panama is much newer (2008 vs. 1985) and is comprised of two towers (1-Beachside; 2-across the street). There are two pools (one beachside and one on the 5th floor of tower 2). I recall there being a small snack bar (if it is open), there are hot tubs and an exercise facility. Amenity-wise, that's pretty much it. The condos are very nice (at least those i've stayed in) and most have large balconies.

Edgewater is more sprawling...5 beachfront buildings as well as villas around a golf course across the street. There are several pools, including a large lagoon-style pool beachside. There is an onsite restaurant/grill (99% sure), tennis, etc. The wild card there is the upkeep of the unit you get due to age...some are great and others haven't been updated since they were built.

Location-wise, both are roughtly center-beach. There is a mini-golf course next to Edgewater, as well as an arcade and a few walkable restaurants...but, you'll want to drive to the rest.

You might want to consider the Pier Park area, which has tons of shops, restaurants, a movie theater, etc all walkable. Calypso is right across from Pier Park (No hot tubs. Otherwise, similar amenities to Grand Panama and also newer). Also within walking distance of Pier Park, Aqua is very nice and has indoor/outdoor pool, hot tub, etc.

A tad further down the beach from Edgewater, you might take a look at Shores of Panama. That one has a huge lagoon-style pool and is new as well. That building is built like a horse shoe, so the 3BR units right out front have the best views, wrap balconies, etc. This is next door to Pineapple Willie's, which is a good grill-style restaurant right on the beach.

Wherever you choose, I would recommend checking with owners on VRBO.com. You can see photos of the actual unit you are reserving and prices tend to be better than the resort offices. You might also google Joni's Beach Rentals...they are good to work with.

Hope this helps...Have a good trip!

We have stayed at Edgewater several times but not recently. I would rent from VRBO if at all possible. As a previous poster said, some of the owners have not updated since the early eighties. In my experience, the condos on VRBO are usually kept updated and are nicer than the ones rented out through the front offices. What we love about Edgewater is the lagoon pool and they have a bar and restaurant right there at the pool. They used to show movies at night at the pool, but not sure if they still do that. You might also want to check the reviews. Edgewater has had some not so great ones.
