Advice needed for DisneyWorld/Universal Studios

We are a Aussie family (with a 14 and 15 year old) planning a US trip in mid-December with Orlando being our first stop on the East coast. We plan to spend 4/5 days in Orlando dividing our time between Disney World and Universal studios. Any advice about accommodation would be greatly appreciated. Are we better off staying in one of the park accommodations or in accommodation elsewhere in Orlando e.g.. not far from Downtown Disney? Any tips for discounts etc for first timers?

Are you planning to hire a car?

what is your budget for hotels- low, medium or high end?

4/5 days in Orlando is not really enough time to do both parks (dont forget each one is not just one big park they are made up of several) you would not be able to make the most of each one. Given you have teenagers I think they would enjoy the rides at Universal more than Disney but again depends if they are really into Mickey Mouse etc.

If you do attempt to do both ( may be a very full on first stop!) then I would suggest staying in International Drive so you are then only 10 mins from Universal and 10 mins from Disney by car.

We stayed in the Lake Eve Resort just off International Drive in a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom suite. Was very reasonable (try comparing through travelrepublic and then direct to see if they price match we paid $99 a night in August) and comes with a full kitchen with washing machine- helpful to leave your first port of call with clean clothes! Very hand for the parks and they have a free shuttle to both parks and the itrolley (a bus) stops right outside to take you up and down Int Drive.

Hope that helps. I'm sure when the British TAers wake up you will get some more suggestions!

I would suggest going to disney for your first 3 or 4 nights then having a night at a universal hotel which would give you front of line access. It will be hard to fit everything in but would make the most of your time there.
