Assuming you will be leaving Miami International about 18:00 local, plan on the 230+ mile trip taking taking about 4.5 to as long as 6 hours because of evening rush hour traffic and possible delays.

Unfortuately, there is no quick way at this time of day. Virtually every major highway will be clogged with traffic and it will be slow going until you get north of West Palm Beach. Once north of WPB, you should have clear sailing - assuming there are no traffic delays.

The best route is to take will probably be to 'tough it out' in rush hour traffic on Interstate 95 north to the Florida Turnpike north.

There are several turnpike service plazas on the turnpike for stops.

Plan on around $20US in tolls one way.

Agree with Endeavour about all he said, but a better begining route would be to head west on the 836 expressway from the airport (get directions and a map from the rental car agency) as this will take you to the Florida turnpike (approximately 5 miles "in rush hour traffic"). Should be pretty smooth sailing going north on the turnpike after about 2 miles when you pass the "Doral exits" around NW 40th street in Miami. This way avoids the dreaded I-95 altogether and gets you on the main route to Orlando (the Florida turnpike) about 20 miles sooner than taking the totally grid locked I-95 north at that time of evening. There will be 2 additional $1 tolls, but it's well worth it.

The above posters did a good job at answering most of your questions. The drive from Miami to Orlando is usually about 4-5 hours depending on traffic, take the Florida Turnpike straight northbound to Orlando. The Turnpike has multiple rest areas along the way with indoor food courts, restrooms, and gas stations. Drive Safe and Have Fun in Orlando!

yep-- its a long journey especially after a long flight--- unless you have to be in your villa by a certain time i would be surely be tempted to take a break en route at a motel/hotel but nowhere near MIAMI---

We have friends who got cheaper tickets to fly to MIAMI and they chose to drive then to our villa in kissimmee-- They regretted it deeply --they had not realised the length of the journey especially after the flight and they decided to cut short their holiday in the villa to travel back a day earlier effectively they lost nearly thre days of their vacation [they needed a days sleep to catch up!!

They said--never again--- flights to ORLANDO OR TO TAMPA next time for them-- wise after the event but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

we done this route a few times and it took us 3.5 hours in July, we did have a clear run and hubby did put his foot down, we didnt hit any traffic although we leave miami early morning as wed stayed in a hotel for a few hours, on the return journey we again left orlando early and arrived at miami in plenty of time for check in,

sorry not much good with roads, we did take the turnpike, and it was around 20$s, couldnt say which routes best out of airport, it wasnt bad at all,

Just got back and would like to say thanks for the driving tips :)

We left Miami at about 1745 and took the Florida Turnpike and arrived at our hotel at about 2110. The tolls were about $17 up to OBT where we got off.

I must admit we was shattered when we got there and next time would stay a night in Miami.

Thanks again :)

or better still--fly either direct to TAMPA [ONER HOUR TO ORLANDO] OR TO ORLANDO DIRECT

THEN -- USE A VILLA -instead of a hotel-- no check in worries, no keys to sort out--straight to bed!!1

Mike:

Isn't this when the NHC anticipate that Wilma may hit South Florida if it's on-track, and of so hadn't you better check with ( unless of course they cancel your outward flight) your Airline?
