Day Trip to Miami

Will be spending two weeks in Naples with two children aged 5 and 3. We want to do one or two day trips to Miami and wondered if anyone had any ideas for us. Bearing in mind that we have beaches in Naples and surrounding areas, we are looking for other activities. Also important is that we don't want to spend more than necessary in the car.

Thanks, by the way, to all of you who have been so helpful with our previous postings.

There's the Miami Seaquarium:

Also, check: www.gmcvb.com - the web site for Miami's Convention and Visitors Bureau

To go along with Endeavour's recommendation of the Seaquarium there are so many choices for your time in the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area. It is roughly an hour and half drive each way from Naples to the other side of the state. It is also a toll, $1.50 each way. All of the following have websites for you to investigate further: Wannado City (your children will absolutely love this), Lion Country Safari, Museum of Science and Industry in Ft Lauderdale( they have a special section for children under age 7), The Miami Zoo, Parrot Jungle Island, and Miami Children's Museum. There is of course more but this should get you started and really none of these places are duplicates of what you will find in Naples. Enjoy!

During your day trip, I strongly reccomend that you do not visit the miami seaquarium. This facility fails to meet the needs of its animals. To learn more and take action to stop the cruelty, visit these sites:

Most of the controversy is about a killer whale there called Lolita. Once free, she now lives alone in a tank to small for her in a park that cannot meet her needs. Along with Lolita, other animals, includind bottlenose dolphins, live in inadequate environments. The park should be shut down. You can make a difference! Learn more and don't visit the park!

Have fun on your trip!

An airboat ride in the Everglades and a trip to the Miami Zoo would be nice

Hi again Ameliashiner, I would second the caution against the Miami Seaquarium. It's not worth the price of admission. Parrot Jungle has a beautiful new facility, but the admission prices are outrageous! If you want birds and animals, we have a charming Aviary here in Naples, and the zoo, Caribbean Gardens, is perfect for your young kids.

One interesting activity is actually on the way to Miami. Consider a day trip to the Miccosukee Indian reservation at Exit 49 on I-75 (Alligator Alley). It's about an hour east of Naples. There's a great snake exhibit, an airboat ride that doesn't destroy the habitat, and a wonderful swamp buggy tour of the res. with some very inquisitive ostriches. There's also a nice little museum there.

While in Naples, the kids might enjoy a visit to the Conservancy (www.conservancy.org).
