Advice on area / hotel

Hi there :)

Coming to Miami for 10 nights as of June 3rd. Staying with a family friend for the first 3 nights and then looking for a nice hotel. I have narrowed it down to either the Mondrian or The Hotel of South Beach. These are both completely different obviously & I need some help weighing up the pros & cons...

We enjoy lounging by the pool / beach, having a stroll around the shops, any sporting activities (ie, golf, volleyball, soccer...), eating out, people watching. Our plan for Miami is to do this sort of stuff, but also to enjoy some quiet time, chilling...

Can anyone provide any advice as to which hotel would be most suitable for us?

Mondrian - Are there local restaurants & bars? How far to the beach and Ocean Drive? Is it a safe walk down to the heart of the action? Does the hotel provide cooking facilities? Are there any golf courses nearby? Resort fee / hidden costs??

The Hotel of South Beach - Is this hotel suitable for chilling out at night if we dont want to go out? Are there cheap eateries nearby? Golf courses?

There is a £100 ($150 roughly) difference in price and we are students trying to celebrate our college graduation on a very tight budget so looking for the most bang for our buck!

ANY advice is appreciated... Thanks in advance!! :)

1. Re: Advice on area / hotel

If this is your first trip to the area, I recommend The Hotel (or some hotel within 3/4 blocks of the ocean.) However, the Mondrian is pretty nice if you do end up there.

To answer your specific questions:

Mondrian - local bars/restaurants - yes, several. About 20 min walk to the beach (there is also a 25c local bus that'll end taking about the same time). Safe to walk - yes, Cooking facilities - in most rooms I think, but please confirm that. The Miami Beach Golf Course is about a mile away, check their website: http://www.miamibeachgolfclub.com/ or check Normandy shores a few miles north: http://normandyshoresgolfclub.com/. Not sure about resort fee.

The Hotel - Yes, it's not noisy unless you end up with a room facing the front (or facing the back alley - early morning garbage pickup). Yes, lots os cheap eateries. Same golf courses and distances as for Mondrian.

If you're on a tight budget you can explore some of the less expensive hotels, or a private conso rental.

Thank you rk2005 for your great insight & advice :)

We have now chosen the Mondrian, simply due to its more luxurious look! We can absolutely handle a 20 min walk to the beach and all the action, and figure the bars/restaurants may be a little cheaper outside of ocean drive etc!

Thanks again.

I'm sure you'll have a great time. Here's a link to a review of the Mondrian you may not have seen before:
