What part of Miami should I stay in?

My boyfriend and I will be in Miami for two nights. I want to stay somewhere where I have access to cuban food and somewhere to go dancing (live Latin music is a HUGE plus). We don't have to be within walking, but I would like to be close. I'm seeing a lot of forums saying that South Beach is the place to be for nightlife, but every hotel is way out of my price range or else seems totally divey. I need a place that has more intermediate stay options. Any suggestions?

You might search South Miami (close to the University of Miami) and Coral Gables, which probably still has a few low-cost hotels. See if the Ponce de Leon Hotel is still there. Coral Gables is rather sedate and affluent. There might also be something in Coconut Grove.
