Rent a car for a weekend in downtown Miami ?

Hi, we (father and son) will be in Miami for a weekend (Friday-Monday) to watch 2 NBA games. We are staying in downtown, need to travel to/from the airport and have a "free" day from games to travel around. Should we rent a small car or rely on public transportation ? We will walk to the games. Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't bother - public transport is fine and the odd taxi in the mix will still probably be cheaper than renting and parking...but it's a personal view.

If your plane arrives/departs in the daytime, just take the Metrorail Orange Line to downtown. Once downtown, the free MetroMover stops near most hotels.

If your goal is to stay in downtown, a car won't be needed...also most hotels charge $35/day in parking.

Depends on where you plan to go. If primarily downtown and/or beach, then skip the car. If Everglades or Sawgrass Mills or similar, then car will be needed.

It really does depend on your plans for your free day. If you want to tour and check out other parts of Miami, Fort Lauderdale, go shopping, etc, then a car would be the best way to go but as already pointed out find out how much your hotel charges for parking to factor in that cost. However, if you plan on taking it easy, go walk on the beach, etc, then a taxi is easy and cheap enough to get from downtown to South Beach. Between South Beach, Brickell, and Bayside that should probably keep you busy enough for one day.
