Best Grocery store

Coming in July. Looking for closest groceries and fresh seafood. We always try to avoid the touristy places and shop where the locals shop. We are coming in from Tampa Airport. Also, maybe purchase some fun floats and water toys for the boys. Hoping to find some neat shops along the beach somewhere to browse and maybe a neat shell shop with good prices. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Traveling with two tweens, going to Kayak and take a snorkel cruise and go to the Mote with a tour from there, but any ideas are welcome. Thanks so much for all your help so far.

The major supermarket on Longboat Key, a Publix, is going to close after Easter, be torn down, and replaced with a new Publix that is scheduled to open in December.

On the mainland, there is a Publix on Cortez Road in Bradenton if you plan to enter Longboat Key from the north and a Publix on Rt 41 in Sarasota if you plan to enter from the south.

The CVS which is next to the Publix on Longboat Key will stay open during construction and has a selection of beach stuff. Anna Maria Island, just north of Longboat Key has a Publix and stores with beach stuff in the adjacent shopping centers.

If you're coming down from Tampa, we usually get off I-75 at Exit 210, Fruitville Road, to come across to get onto Longboat Key. via St. Armands Circle. There is a large and good Publix at the corner of US 41 and 10th Street, just a few blocks north of Fruitville. You could stop there to do some stocking up before getting onto Longboat; depending on where you'll be staying on Longboat, that may be your closest location this summer. There's also a new large Publix just south of downtown where 301 and 41 join.

For shell/beach things, Alvin's Island on St. Armands has a large (and touristy) selection.

The local store people had thought that the store would close the day after Easter (April 9) but the exact timing will depend on getting approval of building permits so that could drag it out a bit. Late April, though, probably means that the store will be closed by then.

If you come in on Saturday morning go to the Sarasota farmers market on Lemon St, for the most beautiful produce at great prices. This is where the locals shop and the best place to buy your fresh fruit for the week as well a s veggies, they have just about everything. There are also vendors with goumet cheeses, breads, pizza dough, calzones, custom made popsicles. Lots of good food for the condo. Pack your grocery bag. This is the best farmers marketI have ever been to, it's huge and it's more like a festival. Great way to kick off your visit.

Publix is a wonderful grocery store with alot of prepared foods, like salads, rotisserie and fried chicken, sandwhich bar, sushi. Premade meatballs, burgers, preseasoned chicken and fish ready for the grill. Lots of precut veggie packages. Tons of choices of precut and presesoned, ready to cook fresh foods. There are alot of Publix on the way from TPA.

Mortons my favorite, has a plethora of home made on the premises salads. Every kind you can think of. I missed it last time I was there, but still highly rreccomend it and the prices are good.

As far as beach toys, check with the place you are staying first, most places have a supply of these things for guests to use.

What time will the farmers market last until? Is Lemon street large or do I need a cross street. How far from Tampa Airport?

Lemon Ave. is not "large". You will have to cross Main St. to see the entire market. There is also a Whole Foods Market at the end of Lemon.

The market is over at 1:00 PM.

On Main Street there are also some great bakeries (C'est la Vie, Pastry Art) and many restaurants.
