commuting on Longboat Key

I will be flying into Sarasota Airport in a few weeks. I will be staying at the Silver Sands Resort on Longboat Key. I was wondering what I should do about getting to the Key from the airport and whether I will need transportation once I get to the resort? I am not planning on doing anything but sitting on the beach, a little shopping and meals. Will I need transportation to stock the kitchen once I get there? I understand the cab fare will be around $40 to and from which is not a problem, but also don't want to be trapped once I get there.

I think $40 sounds high for a cab fro the SRQ airport.

Renting a car is the most convenient way to get around.

Agree with the prior response. Cab fare will be closer to $30 to $35, and a rental car would be a definite asset. Silver Sands is close to a small shopping area where there are several restaurants and shops, but no grocery. The nearest grocery is about two miles away. You could take public bus transportation if you want; it runs every 30 minutes during the daytime and costs $1 each time. But you really will be limiting yourself in being able to explore the area and to have a wider selection of restaurants or shops.
