Bikes in the Keys

Hi Everyone - I have been stalking the Key West board for a few weeks now because we are planning our Key West trip for September 2014.

We are road-tripping from Miami and will make our way to Key West. So we want to park our car and walk or bike most of the time we are there.

When you rent a bike and go places, do you need to have a chain and lock? Or do people just park and leave them when you go into stores, restaurants, beaches?

We will probably hit a Walmart before we leave the Miami area, so we could always buy a lock if we need to.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Yes, always lock your bike. Bike theft is a problem here.

And be sure they include lights if you are planning on riding at night!

Absolutely lock your bikes.

I also recommend Eaton. They're wonderful people to deal with.

Biking around KW is really enjoyable. I hope you have a good time.

Just got back from a 7 day stay. We rented bikes thru Eaton. They delivered to our cottage and came and picked them up. Yes, we always locked up with the chain/lock provided. Biking is the only way to get around the island. I am an out of shape oldie but enjoyed biking the town very much.

I love biking there also! Its so flat, that its easy! I came home and wanted a bike like they have in the keys. My dh bought one for me and phew I can barely go around a couple of blocks with all these hills we have!

I was told that bike theft is the number one crime in Key West. ALWAYS lock your bikes!!

Thank you Deb and Traci! I am really looking forward to the bike part. Glad that you both enjoyed getting around that way. Sounds like Eaton is the one to call.
