Merlin or Wicker Guesthouse?

We've narrowed our choices down to the Merlin and Wicker Guesthouses based on location and being close to where our friends have already booked. The Merlin has a 1-bedroom cottage available and the Wicker has a deluxe room (king bedroom separate from the living room area). Both are around the same price. We are a couple traveling with a 4-year old who loves the pool so that plays a huge factor in our decision. Other than the pool, can anyone offer any insight on the two guesthouses which might help us with our decision? Thank you!

Unless your 4 year old is silent, I would stray away from Merlin. We stayed there in June. Not a fan of the place or the snooty mgmt. The room was OK in size, we don't need much room especially since we usually shower & sleep there only. The air conditioner smelled horribly of mildew, so bad to the point we had to leave the patio door & window open with only a fan in 90 degree heat. They didn't do anything about it, including apologize for any inconvenience. Plus, having a bedroom seperate is a plus with a child. (Helped us a ton in Disney in May)

Bought a Wicker Guest House 3 night package at a silent auction. Looked forward to our getaway in June. One word can sum it up: disgusting!

Was given a nice large ground level suite. Walls were paper thin. You could hear if someone showered, toilet flushed, talked. About 2am, someone took a tumble down the stairs. Boyfriend turned on the room light and we saw many many (hundreds) roaches scurry!!! Checked to see if the guy was ok. Turns out he pushed his suitcase down the stairs, not wanting to carry it and was leaving for the drive to Miami!?! Other guests loudly came and went all night.

After seeing the roaches, we were afraid to turn off the light again! Rough, sleepless night. The breakfast "buffet" consisted of literally frozen pastries, old bread and orange juice that tasted like Tang. One of the cleaning ladies put down her load of dirty linens and reached bare handed in a bread bag to pull out more slices for guests . Eww! All the workers and front desk were Russians. Pleasant enough, but zero attention to cleanliness and sanitation.

It was so bad, we forfeited the next two nights and drove home!

The Duval House is in that same general area, and we love staying there.

I also like The Duval House. Tropical Inn is another really nice option in the area.
