snorkeling from public beach without using an outfitter

thinking of visiting in late August. we are both experienced snorkelers and would like to know where we can snorkel without having to use a company that takes you out.

You can snorkel from any public beach in the keys however you won't see a lot as the reef system is off shore. The Atlantic side will have some broken coral and a few fish, the gulf side more sponges and if you are near a dock you will find some fish feeding there. At John Pennykamp Park in Key largo you may be able to see more there close to shore. Thats where the statue is located. I have not snorkeled there some am not sure how far out it is to the statue. Bahia Honda park just south of the 7-mile bridge is also a popular spot to snorkel from shore.

Christ of the Abyss is about six miles east of the Key Largo cut and only reachable by boat.(take the four and a half hour trip offered by Pennekamp State Park) Aside from that, as bornwithwheels says all of the good reef's are a ways off shore, though you may find some rock out croppings here or there. Do forget your dive flag. Enjoy!
