Swimming with dolphins in the open ocean?

I love dolphins, but hate the idea of them being in an enclosed space and having to perform for tourists. I've searched a lot of companies in the keys, and from the pictures, the dolphins all seem to be in enclosed areas...even if it is a lagoon. Is there such thing as being able to snorkel in the open ocean alongside them, or is that impossible? Thanks :)

I saw and got into the water with young dolphins near American shoal lighthouse. I was lucky. We went fishing and headed out to go spear fishing and saw a pod. Just luck but was amazing.

the ones in the wild are wild -- and not inclined to cozy up to humans.

There a many dolphins in the wild, In most cases they will not come near you. Like any wild animal they are not used to human interaction so would not behave like those you see in captivity or on TV. We have had them come near our boat when fishing but generally don't hang around long. They are usually looking for food so they stay on the move.

It's also a crime to frolic with dolphins in the wild. FWC considers it interfering with wildlife.

Let me be clear. I did not touch or bother them! I watched with a mask and snorkel from a distance. Please do not judge since you where not present. I was far away.

If they approach YOU, and you don't touch, chase, or feed them, there's no harm and no foul.

Touching, chasing, or feeding is considered interfering with wildlife.

Hey, I don't make the rules. You can read the rules here. Even I am surprised they suggest observing from a distance of 50 yards, so as not to 'harass' them.
