Marathon vs. Islamorada

Thanks to a suggestion here, we looked into Tranquility Bay and it looks wonderful...I hope.

We had originally thought that we would stay in Islamorada. Any comments on Marathon? Do they roll up their sidewalks at 10 pm (In July). How long is the drive to Islamorada and does it make sense to go there to eat and do activities? Is Marathon recommended for families with older teens? Any good restaurants/stores on Marathon?

thanks in advance.

Outside of KW, most places roll up the sidewalks around 10ish. Not to say alllll, but it gets quieter. Mainly due to everyone being worn out from a day full of sun, salt water and sand. The places would stay open if business warranted it. That said - still bars and food to be found in both places, just not an over abundance because you'll be the only ones there. But if you have teens you can't take them into some of these bars in any FL city.

. Islamorada is 20 mins from the start of Marathon on Grassy Key to the start of Islamorada on Lower Mattecumbe. 30 mins from the heart of each. It makes sense to go to Islamorada to eat and for activities just as it does to go to Marathon if you are staying in Islamorada. Both have different things to see and do and restaurants and shops. The entire chain of the Keys are fabulous for families of all ages. Some areas just quieter then others, but all family friendly.

A big nightime activity is sitting by the water at night, enjoying friends, cocktails and stars - you can do that too, it's part of the beauty esp during a full moon. The Keys even plan parties around this, as well as weddings etc.

Blue is right, by the time you spend your day doing water activites and sight seeing most people just want to relax with a couple cocktails and watch the sunset. You will be surprised how much the sun and heat takes out of you each day. We also like to rent bikes and ride around in the evenings. Take a ride on the old 7 mile bridge, etc.

You will find there are no major shopping malls and only Key West has any major department stores. The upper keys have some cute tourist type shops, K-Mart and Bealls Outlet. Key West has loads of different types of shops. Some good some very touristy t-shrit all looks the same shops.

No matter which key we stay on we make day trips to other keys to shop, eat, etc.

You will find most people recommend Sparky's in Key Colony Beach, Burdines, the Stuffed Pig (for breakfast) and some like Keys Fisheries, also Lazy Days in Islamorada and the Fish House in Key Largo. There are plenty of other recommendations too. Lots of posts on here about places to eat and things to do.

Thank you Born & Blue, there certainly are a lot of posts here and I think I'm getting a pretty good picture before I even get going. Thanks for your advice, it really helps.
