constructive criticism about jupiter vacation

My aunt is in her late 80s and this will likely be her last real vacation. I want it to be very special for her so I'd like some constructive criticism about my itinerary. I will be taking her to jupiter in march of 2015 for spring training St Louis Cardinals baseball. It is so early I can't nail down the exact dates, times, etc but this is what I'm planning. 6/7days in Jupiter flying into wpb international from Lamber stl. It looks like Homewood suites Hilton West Palm Beach has the most value for the money as far as a hotel goes. They have free breakfast, also free dinner/drinks mon-thur with grocery service and a free shuttle up to 5 miles away. It ain't cheap but free dinner/drinks saves at least $80 a night for a couple nights alone. I'll be throwing in a round of golf or two where I can, my aunt wont mind me playing golf for a couple hours. Here are my ideas, please feel free to let me know if something else should be considered. Keep in mind, with it being a final vacation on earth and a year to plan money is not an object really.

* 3 days of baseball at roger dean, leaving these days totally open except baseball(broken up, not in a row if possible)

*1 rest day with no real plans(jet lag+80 year old=?)

*light house/boat tour day

-Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse tour

-lunch at Guanabanas

-Pon tiki boat tour(inter-costal boat tour package)

spa/kayak day(personal day)

-Jupiter Beach Resort Spa/relaxing at the pool or beach(3 or 4 spa packages for my aunt)

-Loxahatechee river kayak/bass fishin trip(canoe outfitters of Florida *riverbend package* for myself)

Here are the other two dinners I have planned, of course I am open to anywhere else you can advise. I just don't have a night picked out; will once it gets closer and a 2015 spring training schedule is announced:

*Twilight dinner cruise-Majestic Princess Cruises

*Jetty's Waterfront(outside table with lighthouse view)

If you think there is someplace better than any of the places mentioned above please let me know. I am also looking for help with a couple questions that I think advice from locals would be best:

-Best bass bait/lures to bring(very small plano box, maybe a dozen lures/plastics)

-A golf course that isn't too stuffy, possibly with golf club rental( I am not very good at golf and don't want any hassle about my skill level)

-local hospital with the best service just in case my aunt has a problem while out of town(she is healthy but you never know)

-Fairly clean/safe slot machine room in the area (there don't seem to be any casinos near the area but my aunt loves slot machines.)

-safe/nice public beach to get a couple hours of ocean time in for myself

-any neighborhoods/streets we should stay away from(crime, drugs, etc)

I will be bringing my own fishing poles for sure but I'm not opposed to renting golf clubs. I can fedex my clubs down ahead of time to the hotel if need be. I'd rather not have to deal with shipping clubs but that is minor. Thanks for the help :)

I'm not competent with the local details, but in Jupiter, you will be in a generally upscale-to-wealthy area.

Check the timing of the local golf tournament. This year, it's at the end of Feb./start of March.

For beach, Carlin Park, literally at the end of the road, is fine. You might drop up to Blowing Rocks Preserve (a Nature Conservancy property) or get a look at Jonathan Dickinson State Park, a tract of scrub and pinelands that was in part a military camp during World War II. Palm Beach Gardens, to the south, is the regional shopping hub.

I live in a community that tends to send its serious medical cases to Orlando or even Tampa (a major cancer center) rather than south to Palm Beach County or Miami.

The Florida legislature is unlikely to alter gaming laws this year, so I think full-scale gambling will continue to be sort of restricted to Seminole casinos.

The only one I can help with is the slot machines, Florida has shut down all its adult arcades so your only option would be to add in a bus trip to the Hard Rock in Ft. Lauderdale. You could drive it but it might be easier by bus rather than worry about parking, directions, traffic, etc.

One other place I can recommend to eat is The Dive Bar in Jupiter. It has indoor and outdoor seating and great food and right on the waterfront. Beautiful giant saltwater fish tank in the middle of the bar area but its not just a bar its a restaurant and very popular. You may want to call for reservations or call ahead seating.

If you don't get info on the fishing, try www.floridasportsman.com and click on the Southeast tab, then the Freshwater tab. There is also a forum on their site which may help. You might consider getting a guided trip also.

I am the local hospitals like Jupiter Medical Center are just fine for emergencies. Palm Beach has St. Marys, Good Sam and JFK so you might ask on the Palm Beach forum which one is the best and which one is closer to where you are staying.

Same with the golf, you might want to post that question on that Palm Beach forum.

Sounds like you have a nice trip planned, hope your aunt enjoys her time in Florida.

Ok having lived in Jupiter for a dozen years and an hour away now maybe I can help. First and foremost steer clear of West Palm Beach Hotel/Motel. There are options in Juno Beach and Jupiter much safer and still a good value (Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express etc). At 80yrs old she should not be left on her own in the motel you mention. Trust me! Jupiter Medical Center is an excellent Hospital. Also very nearby is Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center. I have had occasion to use both. No need to ship fishing rods. You can get an inexpensive rod holder to bring a couple in (we do it all the time). The Juno Beach Fishing Pier nearby most likely has rental rods and WalMart sells a decent combo for a good price. Jetty's is a place our Older Parents love to go. They have very good food and a popular Early Bird. If money were not an issue the Jupiter Beach Resort is an excellent place to stay! On the beach with fishing nearby as well as good restaurants, Roger Dean Stadium, Jupiter Medical Center.....There is a new Casino Boat at the Port Of Palm Beach (20 min away) that will sail at 11 am daily fully refurbished with slots! They also have a night cruise but can't count on being back before 1 am! Abacoa Golf Course nearby is public. Also Jupiter Dunes is a par 3! Happy Planning!

The Hilton Homewood Suites in West Palm Beach (at an I-95 exit) is one exit north of a former mall that declined partly because people didn't feel safe in the area (but perhaps more importantly, the newer Gardens Mall was far more attractive). The former mall has now been replaced with an outlet mall, similar to the ones in Orlando.

I may be missing something, but I haven't spotted a comment on Donald Ross Road (specifically Donald Ross Village) being a bad location. My gosh, it has Roger Dean Stadium, a Ritz-Carlton, a state university campus, the Scripps research center, and Abacoa--one of the more ambitious efforts to create a "town center".

Not sure where the OP got the idea Donald Ross Village is not a good place. We have many friends who live in the area and love it! Naturally if price is no issue Oceanfront in Jupiter is preferable as a vacation destination. Donald Ross Village is very close to Roger Dean Stadium, there is also a hotel under construction literally steps to the stadium in Abacoa. Personally we would not recommend the Hilton Homewood Suites in WPB to Family or Friends. Just not a safe area after dark. There is sadly increased drug related and gang related crime/violence in the area. Security for the new outlet mall (opened only one wk ago) may help...not betting on it.

If you stay near the stadium there are some good restaurants in Abacoa and in Donal Ross Village. We prefer the beach area places more. All time Favorite Capt Charlie's Reef Grill in nearby Juno Beach (10 min drive), Jetty's which you noted, a very casual seafood oriented place in Jupiter Schooners has been a local favorite for many years (not on the water). For breakfast the Juno Beach Cafe is well loved. Fishing Riverbend will be scenic. An idea may be to stay a few nights out by Roger Dean and at least 2 at Jupiter Beach Resort to enjoy the beach/spa. We really enjoy a spa day and spending the night at the same locale makes it special as once you are so relaxed there is no need to leave. With a Mother in her 80s we have learned the simpler the better and not to try and do too much. Be sure that some of the things you reference are still in business before you travel (ie: Pon Tiki, Majestic Princess) these things tend to change year to year!

You gave me that idea obxpat. I could be mistaken because I am using google maps as my trip planner but the Hilton Homewood suites is located inside the Donald Ross shopping center/village. It is just over a mile from roger dean located approximately at the corner of Donald Ross rd and central blvd. I just noticed my mistake the actual name of the hotel is Homewood suites by Hilton PALM BEACH GARDENS. It appears I had the wrong town entirely, sorry for the confusion.
