45 Days to Go

My wife and I will be spending 5 days in mid sept for a conference. We arrive on Sunday, will miss the trip to Fairchild Gardens as we arrive at the airport when the bus will leave the hotel. We are staying at the Marriott. My conference is Mon, Tues, and 1/2 Wed. My wife will go to HR on Mon and a cruise on Tues.

We will be on our own on 1/2 Wed, Thur, and 1/2 Fri. What is there to do around the Marriott and places to eat within walking distance. We may rent a car for Thur for a day trip, depending on $$.

Renting a car ought to be pretty cheap, as your conference is in mid Sept, and this isn't the height of the season. I problem with the Marriott is that if you rent a car for a longer period than one day....Marriott charges a hefty fee to park.

From your name treeguy, I feel bad that you missed that Fairchild Gardens trip. Anyone with any interest in botany ( or gardening) would love to see that place.

A sister Gardens called Flamingo is much closer to you in the Hollywood area. But it is not easily accessed if you don't have transport. As is many other things. You will like the beach. Fully guarded, Blue Wave rated, a top plae to be in the heat of September.

I don't know what your interests are, or how good you are able to walk. You are near the Anne Kolbe nature center ( see attractions), and you might enjoy that. You are also near two new casinos. (Maybe 3 if the Dania Fronton is finished).

One is the Hollywood Race track called Mardi Gras, the other in the Gulf Stream Trace Track ( Gulfstream is much nicer...IMO...and the new ones are required by state law to pay back at least 85% . The Seminole HARD ROCK Casino (on the Hollywood Resrvation) is beautiful, but allows smoking and does not have to follow payback rules. The Sun Sentinel mentioned they estimate the payback at 55%.

Both tracks above are in Hallandale, so you need to check the Hallandale Forums for info.

Here is what I gave to another walker who wanted info on some of the local restaurants:

One block north from you is Oceans Eleven on the beach (3111 N Surf), Ocean's Eleven On the Beach

3111 N Surf Rd, Hollywood, FL

(954) 927-5549 - 0.1 mi N (and there is a small overpriced convience store near it)

and about 2 blocks south is Marriott Hollywood Beach Hotel Resort (more than one resturant).

Marriott Hollywood Beach Hotel & Spa

2501 N Ocean Dr, Hollywood, FL

(561) 274-2323 - 0.2 mi S

I assume you are a good walker? One block west is US Rt A1A, and a short walk S will have many places (Las Palmas & so one) for food and drink. However, it is more pleasant to walk along the b'walk and then the one block west. (We trird Las Palmas twice....friendly, nice, food OK, but boy do they seem to mess up orders.

Also furthur S (still an easy walk) on A1A is Le Tub ( even if the hamberger is super, the staff is terrible),

Le Tub

1100 N Ocean Dr, Hollywood, FL

(954) 921-9425 -

and next to it is Capones Flicker Lite......once a real pearl, but it seems to have gone down a bit (service) in the last few seasons. Only Chicago Bears go there...on motoercycles (only kidding)...but the place has very good food & a good Chicago Pizza. Main place in Chicago still called Capones if family still owns it. Pricing here is very fair...& food is usually better than good.

Capones Flicker Lite: Pizza & Raw Bar Restaurant

1014 N Ocean Dr, Hollywood, FL

(954) 922-4232

Walking furthur S on the B'Walk will bring you to the area just S of Garfield.....where most of the big restaurants and bars are along the b'walk:

Angelo's Corner (Only food....no hard stuff. Brooklyn Pizza was once near the best in the South...now its OK . This is where you ask about the hand ball or paddle ball playing...and the Garfield Boys and Girls (adults) will offer you a challenge. (watch out for those teens & 80 year olds)

200 Garfield St, Hollywood, FL

(954) 923-0679 - 0.5 mi S

Broadwalk Restaurant & Grill Also no Bar. Pizza here is also OK

1400 N Surf Rd, Hollywood, FL

(954) 922-0322 - 2 reviews - 0.6 mi S

Nicks Bar & Grill excellent food & drink. May get hot if you sit on the b walk outdoor area. At this point, you are about 1/2 mile south of your address you listed:

1214 N Broadwalk, Hollywood, FL

(954) 920-2800

Good food & drink, IMO overpriced for the area:

Sugar Reef

600 N Surf Rd, Hollywood, FL

(954) 922-1119

Good pizza, & dinners is on the corner of Johnson ST & B'walk near the outdoor theater:

Rocco's Pizza

205 Johnson St, Hollywood, FL

(954) 926-3305

Going S on A1A near Hollywood Beach Blvd is a small group of restaurants:

Tavern Opa is a top Greek OPA party place. Pricing is reasonable, they break dishes & dance on the tables....this was the first one. Now if Miami SoBe, Orlando, Tampa, & Ft LAud. Noisy for me

410 N Ocean Dr, Hollywood, FL

(954) 929-4010

Next to Travern Opa is Billys Stone Crab, grand nephew to Joes of Miami. Excellent seafood & crabs:

Billy's Stone Crab Restaurant

400 N Ocean Dr, Hollywood, FL

(954) 923-2300

and on the same strip:

Giorgios Grill (very good but $$$ at time. Has sunset dinner specials)

606 N Ocean Dr, Hollywood, FL

(954) 929-7030

Giorgio's Bakery & Bistro (luncheon mostly)

800 N Ocean Dr, Hollywood, FL

(954) 929-5550

Finally, I can't leave out the Hollywood Beach Hotel & Resort area...even if it Ramada rating is less than one star, tons of folks like;

O'Malley's Ocean Pub (in the swimming pool area of the Ramada

101 N Ocean Dr # 107

and near the place:

Haagen Dazs Ice Cream & Yogurt Shoppe ( A lot more $$ than the ice cream $1.50 cones near Angelos,( but a lot richer

814 N Broadwalk, Hollywood, FL

(954) 923-8888

North Pole Restaurant (Norde Pole)

903 N Broadwalk, Hollywood, FL

(954) 318-2546

Mc Gowan's Lounge & Restaurant

298 Arizona St, Hollywood, FL

(954) 920-6353

Don't forget, most of the places in the area are run by French Canadians......and the food is pretty good.

Hope this helps. (Young Circle area also has tons of places, a lot of jazz clubs, and is 1.5 mile W on Hollywood BEach Blvd. Italian tops there is Conca D'Oro from Brooklyn,,,still a super good NE thin baked to fried pizza. ) Yes has live entertainment. and a bar.

Tell me your interests, and I'll see what we might come up with for the day you rent the car.

If you want to go to the Flamingo Gardens (google their website for coupons) it isn't too far from the biggest indoor outlet center in the USA...Sawgrass Mills.....but maybe with weight restrictions on the luggage, you ought to stay away....(also even if the prices are good...it costs.

Thanks alot, I'll keep this handy.

I'm a steak and patatoes man and my wife will go for chicken and seafood. My wife loves gambling so we may have to try the tracks, but HR is only 55%, that seems very low.

I like nature, so a trip to the everglades in a possiblity. i would love a day trip to Key West, but My wife does not want to stay in the car that long.

What about nightlife for a couple in theit mid-forties? Maybe a classic rock bar or something?

Key West is too far for a day trip. However, click on my name and take a look at my Go List for a day trip to the Keys & Everglades. You can do both!

Only 55% pay back at the Indian Casinos....(Seminole)

Gulfstream (new) is about 3 miles from the Marriott as is Hollywood Mardi Gras, and they are required to pay back 85% and post it as 90.4%......but it doesn't matter to me or wife....we lose at 55% or 90%.....

My favorite steakhouse closed for a condo development. It was one of the Manero's Corps in Hallandale ( There were once about 17 along the east coast from Conn S to Fl)

If Carltons is still open (Diplomat Mall- next to the country club) stay away...

There is a Mortons about 2 miles S of Gulfstream on us Rt one. It is good, but pricey.
