Hollywood from the Airport?

Hi,

My husband and I just reserved a room at Hollywood by the Sea at the beginning of April. We're just planning on relaxing away from the busy-ness of the City (ie, sleeping on the beach, sleeping by the pool, sleeping in the room - you get the idea). Anyway, since we don't really want to drive anywhere, we'd rather not rent a car. However, is there any public transportation between there and Ft. Lauderdale Airport. If not, does anyone know what a taxi would cost us?

Thanks in advance.

Where in Hollywood?????

There are public bus service. And rail.

Go here:

http://sfrtp.cinrtosfl.com/hiwire

I set up a 'pretend' destination of the Broward Hollywood Beach Library branch (on the ocean (A1A) from FLL. The library is in the Flowers section of Hollywood Beach.

You would take Bus route #1 S (which ends in Miami Dades Aventura Mall)...and exit at Youngs Circle (Greyhound Terminal). Then get on bus # 4 south down Hollywood BEach Blvd, over the ICWB, and S on A1A along the beach front.

IF tou make every connection, it will take about 30 minutes. Fare on each bus is $1.00...so total one way is $2.00 per person.

A taxi from FLL to the Westin Diplomat (almost the furthest away hotel in Hollywood on A1A before you are in Hallandale) has been reported here to be just under $20.00. (If they take the SHORTEST route, maybe $15.00 per cab.

Shortest is FLL to us Route one S to Dania Beach Blvd E to over the ICWB .....which starts Hollywood near Marthas Restaurant. That is about 4 miles from the airport....but heading S on A1A will add millage, maybe about 4 to 5 more miles....and a higher fare.

Broward taxi fares are somewhat higher than cabs in NYC.

Thanks KenK. That's very helpful. I think we'll end up taking a cab, since that's within our budget. We're staying at the Hollywood by the Sea B&B - the address is 301 Jackson Street, Hollywood, FL - I don't know if that means something to you, but I have no concept yet of where that is!

It is about 3 blocks south of Hollywood Beach Blvd and the Ramada Hollywood Beach Hotel Resort.

Very easy walk N on B'Walk (past this old hotel to many good restaurants and small oceanfront shops. If you walk S to about Broganvilla (just past the two Summit condo towers), there is a Broward Hollywood Beach front public library with many free computers and free wifi (if you bring a laptop.)

I have walked by the place you mentioned, but just can't remember it. If we get near there during the week, I'll tell you what I see.

The beach has been just beautiful. Bright sun and blue Carribean waters....but the waves will be small (unless we have wind) They are not big like in the NE part of the USA.

BTW The library is on A1A, about a block W of Surf Road (really an access alley)...you'll see when you get here).

IF you are good walkers, you will be able to walk to the Westin Diplomat Hotel Resort, which has many $$$ restaurants...Nikkis as mentioned in that other post, and if you can manage 3 MORE blocks S and an ICWB at Hallandale BEach Blvd.....you can reach the Wal Mart (has some food, not a full supermarket), and across the street, Pedrinos. Look in the Hallandale section of TA for more info.

You are 2.5 miles from the Gulfstream Park racetrack and casino....non smoking and with class A Slots (like AC and VEgas....and poker....but nothing else. (Racing starts at about 1 PM to 5 PM ,and the purses are not small...this is a major track....this Friday (an off day) there were at least 3 races with over $60,000 for the winners. (Thats high for a weekday race, so weekends are even higher)

But if its only a few days.....you might not have the time.

If you walk N from Jackson, and head toward A1A (it is always easier to walk on the B'Walk) right after the Ramada along A1A ( on the Intracoastal side) is Billys Stone Crab....son or Grandson in Law to Joes of Miami.....we don't go there as we don't eat crabs, but it sure seems popular....(THey do have fish)

In the same building is Taverna Opa, and along that strip, the Griogios places...we find just OK

Billys:

Taverna Opa & Giorgios (links 3 in Hollywood....right next to each other:

Last TA review was not so good, but we still like for lunch: {A1A at Johnson}

Hubby like hand ball? Walk N on B'Walk to Garfield. (Just past Angelos Corner..Wally has a small office to help with game times (on surf behind rest rooms)

The 70 & 80 year olds (early AM) {Boys from Brooklyn} will challenge....it don't look easy to me.....make sure someone with CPR training is around if not in shape.

Actually, the fully guarded beach has EMT firemen for lifeguards. Blue wave rated, excellent.

Wow, thank you so very much for all the info...if I can trouble you with just one more question: I haven't been to the Florida shore since the 8th grade (ie a LONG time ago!) Is it possible to snorkel or are the waters murky?

Since we arrived in January, I think there were 3 good snorkle days along the immediate shore line when we went to the beach (about 17 times)

If the water churns at the water line, it puts sand particles and causes clouding.....but this happens less in the AM. There is usually a breeze in the PM (after 12 noon or so..who knows with new daylite savings time?)

In any case, there are snorklers who are allowed to swim out several hundred yards without getting called by the guards. You need a flag that floats on a ball.....or they will call you back. They can give summons (I've only seen them talk & ask for that warning device.

I would bring the mask & snorkle if you have (I just thought about them searching your stuff at the airport). They used to sell that snorkle flag at the Wal MArt I mentioned above....but I didn't notice it lately. It comes on a longish rope. Was about $7.00.....

If I see a local snorkle outfit (There may be one at the Ann Kolbe rec center.....but a LONG walk from Jackson), I'll post

6. Re: Hollywood from the Airport?

For the last two days, the wind has been blowing off the ocean, and the waves are bigger than usual.

That means that the sand is churned, and the visibility will not be good for snorkel. So, now you have to tell the hubby you need to go to the Cayman Islands.....super clear water there!

Maybe it will get better in a few days.....

Thanks for the update! We're not coming down until April 3, so there's still time... :)
