I don't know what your ports of call are, but for the most part you can venture out on your own for much less money. In Fort Lauderdale, for instance, you can get a taxi at the Port and go to the Museum of Discovery and Science and then have lunch nearby. You can also go on a short taxi ride to the nearest Water Taxi Stop - just around the corner at the Convention Center. A Water Taxi boat should stop about once an hour to pick you up and you can ride on the Intracoastal Canal and jump off for lunch somewhere. Just make sure you leave lots of time for the return. Most cruise sponsored excursions are marked up. If you see a few you are interested in and you ask on this or another port's Forum , I'll bet we can find you a cheaper way to do it. Just let me know what you see that you like.

Hi Taryn

We are also cruising on the miracle on july 2 and after visiing a ton of websites and seeing the same excursions offered as the cruiseship we decided that the cost differential wasn't significant enough to book privately.

we're experienced cruisers and we have seen things go wrong on excursions. when you book through the cruise line you at least have reasonable assurance that the ship won't leave port with out you & your group should your excursion be delayed for some reason. If you book privately this could happen (we saw a group have problems with ATVs last summer...injuries & whatnot...the cruise booked trips will be in good communication with the ship).

The differences in price, from what we saw were only $10-$15 lower booking privately. maybe thse operations have "gotten it" that people will pay more. About 5 years ago in mexico we got the excursions half price booking privately. It appears this is no more. At least not in these ports!

Maybe we'll see you onboard. how old are the kids?

Just returned from Carnival Miracle July 23rd. Fabulous. With two teens, do the Dune Buggy excursion, and as much snorkeling as you can. Don't snorkel in Cozumel--it is all brown. Best is Belize. Don't miss Grand Cayman Singray City tour---it is a blast. Caye Cauker was OK, but other snorkeling sites are probably better. leave laptop at home, no wireless available onboard except for a 4 x 6 space in a bar. Internet frequently down. Bring extra luggage tags with you in your purse, you may need these in case they fall off in transit on airlines. Soda cards? We did not even miss sodas with all of the other free juice/ice tea drinks available. Unlimited pizzas were great; unlimited ice cream was great; evening shows were great. If you arrive by air, be sure to page Carnival in the airport baggage area many many times over P.A. system in airport, they will not find you. You need to find them at the far end of baggage area. Dining was fabulous, appetizers were incredible---we ordered many appetizers. Sushi was incredible. We booked excursions for each port through Carnival, found them to be great, well worth the expense, and not to worry about getting back to the ship on time.
