Ft. Lauderdale Hotel

Can anybody make a suggestion for a nice hotel/resort that is directly on the beach at Ft. Lauderdale or a nearby area that has restaurants and some beach bars. Traveling in April 2013. Been to Ft. Myers Beach in March and loved it. Thinking of a different destination for next year.

We are not set on Ft. Lauderdale, just would like to go somewhere different since we've been to Ft. Myers Beach.

Suggestions for any nice beach area in Florida for mid to late April. Must be on the beach, have swimming pool and accommodate 3 people.

If by on the beach you mean on the sand your choices are limited to Lago Mar, Marriott Harbor Beach, Sheraton Beach Resort, Pelican Grand and Suntow. IMO you would need a car for all except the Harbor Beach and Sheraton. Most hotels in Fort Lauderdale are across the street from the beach.

Does anybody have any thoughts about Newport Beach Resort on Collins Ave in Sunny Isles? Not sure about that area, I don't want to be in Miami or South Beach, just asking if anyone could shed some light on this area.

We've stayed in Pompano (tonight is our last night here actually), and there are quite a few beach front hotels and condos. Pompano is quieter than Fort Lauderdale though. There are tons of restaurants and near-by shopping within .5-4 miles. Also look at Lauderdale by the Sea which is in between Fort Lauderdale and pompano. There is more nightlife there and more bars with live music, etc. I think you'll be surprised by all of the options directly on the beach. There is one condo and hotel right after another. In Pompano, try the Beachcomber or Lighthouse Cove Resort. Happy Travels!

I can shed light on the hotel but not on the area, we stayed there for one night to attend a wedding. It's a lovely hotel, very busy when we were there, the pool was mobbed. They have a nice poolside bar which served snacks. We had a slight problem with checking in early, although we had explained on the phone that we needed to get changed for the wedding, however after a bit of forcefull talking at the front desk they upgraded us to suite and let us check in early. All in all a posive experience.

On the beach is a bit of a misnomer in Ft. Lauderdale...there are a lot of "beach" hotels that are only a walk across the street. Not a big deal. The ones on the beach (Marriott Harbour - nice, but expensive and not really close to a lot of food/bar options; and Lago Mar, even more remote and sorta run down).

We like the Hilton, Atlantic, W, some of those in that area. Much closer to bars/restaurants.

I do recommend a car however.

Last winter we stayed at the Hilton, it is directly across the street from the beach and was very nice. I am planning again now and am considering the Hilton again or the Doubletree on Sunrise Blvd to be a little closer to the Galleria Mall. The mall has an excellent food court and we walked there several times as food choices in the area are limited otherwise, or expensive. The Hilton has a small kitchen area as well! We walked everywhere.

It's because for a long stretch the beach/boardwalk area is all public access and the main drag is right up against the boardwalk. On the west side of the street are the hotels, condos and restaurants. This seems to last for a several miles. Further north (Lauderdale by the Sea, Pompano) the street (A1A, right?) veers away from the beach so there is more land for lodging for private and direct beach access.
