florida city for one day

We are staying in Florida city for one night on the way to Marathon and am interested in suggestions of tours in the everglades or sightseeing ideas. I have never bgeen to this area and only have one day there and want to make the most of it. Our trip includes a 5 and 11 year old. Please send ideas of what to or not do.

HEre's the list -

If you have the energy/interest after the Anhinga Trail, also walk the gumbo limbo trail. It's in the same place but a different habitat entirely. Here's the gumbo limbo joke -- - why are gumbo limbos known as the tourist tree? Because they are red and peeling.

There is an airboat operator in the area. I hope you'll go and report back on that experience.

If you want to picnic in the park, there are tables at Long Pine (one stop down from the Anhinga Trail). Ask the rangers about the other stops as you may want to add to your trip.

Since you will be in the Keys, pick up Carl HIasson's book. Flush.

Maybe even get it on tape so the family can listen as you drive. It's about a family in the Keys but offbeat and quirky.
