We stayed at The Fairbanks Inn Bed and Breakfast in Fernadina Beach last night. It is a very charming 3 story Victorian building. We arrived just at the end of the happy hour. We were offered some wine and some cheese and crackers and there was one meatball on a toothpick (were we supposed to split it??). We had called ahead and said we would be coming in right around 6PM and told the happy hour ended promptly by 6:05PM. The room was spotless, charming and comfortable and Bill and Theresa were quite friendly and Bill sat down with us and told us the history of the island. We looked forward to the breakfast part of the stay. Since we were paying $175 we figured it would be sensational. Unfortunately the breakfast was rather disappointing. We had a choice of juices and coffess and teas. We had a small dish of yoghurt with granola on top. Then we had a custard bowl filled with hardboiled egg on the bottom, with a slight layer of cheese and some white dry custard on top. There was a piece of fresh orange and some rather dry lukewarm potato pieces. We had a knife at the table, and were expecting bread or muffins or something (there was no butter on the dining room table so we should have been warned). There was no meat either. This was the worst breakfast we have ever had in a B and B and we are wondering if the Fairbanks Inn has seen better days. I said to the server I was expecting some toast (what was the knife for???) and Theresa came into the dining room and explained that each day she offers some type of starch, some days it is a muffin or biscuit and some days it is a potato. She said if we had asked we could have gotten some toast...Just a mention of our disappointment.
