Visiting Clearwater for 1st timers

Myself, wife and two kids (16 & 10) plus father-in-law will be visiting Clearwater Beach when we are on holiday in Orlando, this will be next June 2014.

We haven't been to the Clearwater area before and would like some advice on visiting the beach area plus any other parts of Clearwater.

We will be driving from Orlando and plan to arrive in Clearwater quite early (maybe 9-10am).

We are interested in beach activities, wildlife as well as relaxing on the beach for a while too!

Whats the best restaurants? We like seafood, except from the kids, so somewhere that does seafood plus other food for kids would be great.

Any advice or recommendations would be great.

Thanks.

There are lots of activities on Clearwater Beach. There are all kinds of boat rides, dolphin sighting cruises, a pirate ship, speedboats, lunch & dinner cruises, sail boats, etc. The marina is right in the heart of the beach area by Pier 60.

On Pier 60, there is a nightly sunset celebration, with street performers, local artists selling their goods, jewelry, photos, paintings, souvenirs, etc.

Very walkable beach area, with a lot of fun restaurants. Most restaurants will have seafood, as well as burgers, wings, sandwiches, something for everyone. There are 4 Frenchy's Restaurants on the beach, all are very good. Crabby Bill's BeachWalk is one of my favorites. It has a second floor open-air seating and bar area with great food, and great views of the beach. Next to it is Frenchy's South Beach Cafe. Very good seafood, and other food also.

On North Beach, Frenchy's Rockaway Grill, and the Palm Pavilion are next to each other. Very good food at both. Very casual places with seating on decks right on the beach.

Cooters is a block off the beach, and also has very good food.

The Columbia Restaurant on Sand Key has great Cuban and Spanish food. Very good Cuban Sandwiches!

The drive from the Disney/Orlando area to the beach usually takes around an hour and 45 minutes. or so.

MarkBee has given you an excellent list. About all I can add is Jimmy's Fish House and Iguana Bar inside the Holiday Inn - they have very good food. If you don't mind driving over the bridge to Sand Key, Maggie Mae's has a very good breakfast menu served all day, and a small lunch and supper menu served until 8 pm. All meals are under $10.00. Also over the Bridge is the Columbia Restaurant. They serve excellent Cuban food - some of the better food in the area.

Thanks, will definitely consider the drive for breakfast.

Can anyone recommend the best day to visit the beach?

Would the weekend be considerably busier than during the week?

Also, if we arrive early morning around 9/10am, would this be advisable?

Obviously we'd have to check the weather forecasts.

Last year, we had to postpone a beach trip due to the big storm (Debby).

It will be much busier on the weekend, or on a holiday, with locals out to play. If going just for the day, I would do it on a weekday, when it is not as crowded, and parking will be a lot easier to find.
