which area?

Hi

My husband and I are thinking of visiting Wilmington for 4 days (from the UK) Which is the best area to look at for hotels (we will not have a car during our visit) - does Wilmington have a good downtown area or is this mainly offices as we found in places like Charlotte and Jacksonville. Also is it easy to get to Rehoboth beach from Wilmington and would you recommend we stay there as well - which area there should we look at?

thank so much

I think Main Street, Newark, DE.

There are a lot of stores, bars and restaurants. It is summer so you won't have all the college kids.

It is a cute little town with a lot of neat stores and places to eat. You can walk up and down the street and it is safe. And a small town as you are looking for

***im looking at the hotels in the area, that are in walking distance, and there is only 1 right on Main Street- super 8 (268 east Main Street). It is a 2 star or. 2.5 star...not sure what type of accommodation you are looking for.

I lliterally just mapped all of the hotels and walking distances in Newark.

The other one, that is a nice hotel, is Embassy Suites, but it is not right on Main Street. When I map it, it says a 35 minute walk and it is on a major highway.

Another idea would be Dover Downs and staying in the casino.

There is an amtrak in Dover www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer…

And this is Dover downs

Again I am not sure of your budget and what type of hotel accommodations you are looking for.

OP has said in the Philadelphia forum that this trip will be in September. So the students will be back at the UofD and Newark will be crowded.

There is no train service in Dover. It's very misleading on the Amtrak site until you get specific about travel between Philadelphia and Dover.

At that point, you are informed that you'll take the train to Wilmington and then a bus between Wilmington and Dover. And no public transportation between Dover and Rehoboth after September 1.

But I guess taking the train/bus combo from Philly to Dover would be an option. Not sure Dover's any better without a car than Wilmington.

Hi, I am happy to assist you. I am the Executive Director for the Greater Wilmington Convention and Visitors Bureau. We have some discounts we can offer on Amtrak as well as with Enterprise Rental Cars. Wilmington has many wonderful festivals that will be starting soon. I would love to get more specific with you on your dates and customize and itinerary for you. Would you email me at swilloughby@visitwilmingtonde.com?

I re-read and must apologize - missed that you were not renting a car.

Several of the hotels (new Westin, Hotel duPont, and several others) have vans. Also, there is a company - Cornucopia Tours with a van service that can be your guide on one day (or several, depending on cost) to the museums and gardens, and other historic and hidden jewels of our city and region. Here is the website: www.cornucopiatours.com

Others here have given you some great ideas, as in Concord Mall and Christiana Mall - all tax-free shopping, Delaware Park, as well as Newark, etc. The Wilmington Riverfront offers a great variety of dining locations and is convenient to the train station. Again, I am happy to customize some more ideas. Best way to reach me is via email swilloughby@visitwilmingtonde.com
