Groton, CT: summer travel ideas needed

Summer travel ideals for day trips from Groton desparately needed. I am looking for things to do in and around Groton (+/- two hour travel time) with my three children, ages 23, 20 and 8. Funny remarks accepted as long as you can offer some good ideas for "family of all ages" fun! Child 20, 8 and I will be traveling from Texas mid-June to spend a week or so visiting Child 23 who is currently stationed in Groton. We like visiting historic places, especially those that allow for interaction (if you are familiar with Jamestown, VA). Any and all other great ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, S.

I guess you have been inundated with ideas.

In brief Mystic is for the family... New London visit the waterfront, downtown shops and historical sites and in Groton head to FT.Griswold for some Rev War History and then to Paul\s pasta on thames street for some great food and views of the water!
