You can take a train to Penn Station in NY and then take cab over to Grand Central and take the Metro North Line directly to Bethel, CT or Danbury,CT.

Take Metro North/New Haven Line to Danbury,CT if you need to rent a car. Bethel does not have an agency in it. Danbury has an Enterprise that can meet you w/the car at the station. Probably the easiest way to handle it. Bethel is a 10 min drive from Danbury, max.

Distance: you can mapquest. Easiest to rent a car. You can do Peter Pan Bus. Looking at schedule you might have to go newport to Waterbury Ct then to Danbury,
