Where to stay near Pagosa Springs...

We'd like to kill two birds with one stone this Fall. Visit relatives in Pagosa Springs. And, hike/fish/play/see a little more of Colorado while we're at it.

We'll have two young children with us. Not really interested in skiing. But, we'd love to see old mining towns, scenery, historical stuff, hike, take train rides, etc.

Is there a city near Pagosa Springs that would be better to stay in--then commute to see relatives? Asking this question, cuz we didn't see too many lodging choices listed in Pagosa Springs. But, we also couldn't figure out another city that would be conveniently located, with more to offer.

Thanks in advance,

JJ

You may want to look at Durango, which is about an hour from Pagosa. In the fall you can still ride the train, do easy walks along the bike/walk path which is next to the river. Also a trip to Mesa Verde Nat Park.

Silverton, Ouray and Telluride are interesting towns within a day trip of Durango.

Thank you, CasaAzul.

That's exactly the advice we needed. Gonna check into lodging in Durango. You included just about all the things we're interested in...hiking, train, day trips, etc.

Thanks, again!

If you do stay in Durango and like to visit mining towns I would suggest a day trip over to Silverton and check out Animas Forks.http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/co/animasforks.html

Or an alternative from Pagosa Spgs. over Wolf Creek pass to the town of Creede. This would be a longer drive but you could always grab a cabin in South Fork for the night.

Dear LMinCO,

Thanks for your reply. The link to ghosttowns.com was cool. Animas looks so interesting.

Thank you for giving us another great idea.

You might also check out northern New Mexico. The Aztec ruins north of Farmington are good to explore and ship rock is very dramatic.
