southwest Colorado for families

We're planning a fall family vacation to southwest Colorado. We're already planning on visiting the sand dunes, Mesa Verde, four corners, and Telluride. Does anyone have any recommendations for fun and educational stops in the southwest part of the state,

especially less known ones that probably wouldn't appear in a guidebook? Our kids are ages 5 and 1.

There is the fish hatchery museum in Durango a few blocks north of downtown. They'd have a blast looking at all the stuffed animals (there's dozens -- nearly every critter native to the area.) and the long troughs of fish of various sizes. There's a short educational video and lots of pelts they can feel. It's free except for 25 cents you can get some fish food to throw to the trout. My kids loved it. It takes about an hour or so to see it. There's a park nearby on the other side of the river. A bridge crosses the river and lots of rafters go under it (at least in summer).

There's also the Animas Museum in Durango http://www.animasmuseum.org/

It's free for your kids and $2.50 for you. We didn't get around to doing this.

There's a playground at the visitor center on the south side of Durango on the Animas river. Lots of pamphlets inside plus they can make reservations for you.

Take Rim Drive around Ft. Lewis for a fantastic aerial view of the Durango valley.

If you are going to be in Durango and also going to the Great Sand Dunes you'll likely be passing through Pagosa Springs. If so go to Chimney Rock and the Rocky Mountain Wildlife Farm. You can read more aout them ad get contact info from my GoList :http://www.tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i6245-Places_to_Go_and_Not_in_Colorado_Part.html

Depending on the time of year you plan to travel and how much time you have, I would make the loop around thru Ouray and Silverton. Both towns are unique and fun.

Check out Crow Canyon... it's an educational facility that teaches about the history of the native americans in the region. Lots of fabulous information offered in their classes plus great hands on activities for the kids:

They offer day tours, just not sure if they have any for this fall.

We were in Durango this past July and LOVED it -- we did the Jeep 4x4 tour with Wild2Mild rafting (also did white water rafting) but the Jeep tour was by far our favorite. We have 2 teenagers and one 7-yr- old and they all loved it. It has unbelievable scenary and takes up across Hurricane Pass. It goes out from Silverton. We also rode the Durango/Silverton narrow gauge railroad. I would only recommend going one way (not both) as it can get long. The scenary there is wonderful too. SIlverton and Ouray are just wonderful little towns and not to be missed, especially Ouray. But be warned - the drive up the Million Dollar Highway to Ouray is not for the faint of heart ! It was rather exciting !!! and we were in our SUV !. No guard rails, numerous switchbacks, a LOT of steep and winding road... but worth the trip!

Have fun - we loved our trip!
