How could I leave out Mesa Verde - From Durango about 45 minutes to entrace, another half hour to sites. On of the "must dos" in the area.

Easy day trip to take in Chapin Mesa, either Cliff House or Balconey House ranger guided tour, short hike to Step House, Chapin Mesa Museum, and drive the loops to view the sites.

And here's a few more ideas:

You don't need to be hikers to enjoy a walk (or bike ride) along the Animas River!

Look at the different combination tours on the Durango-Silverton RR site to add some fun to your train ride and for the best use of time. Most people with kids think that one way on the train is enough.

The Durango Discovery Museum:

Horseback riding, bike riding

Mini golf or other activities at Durango Mountain Resort

Trimble Hot Springs: http://www.trimblehotsprings.com/

or a drive to Pagosa Springs

The beehive and goodies at Honeyville: www.honeyvillecolorado.com/our_factory_store

boat rental or fishing at Vallecito Lake: vallecitolakechamber.com/Marinas/index.asp

Drive to Cortez for the evening to see the Indian dances at the Cortez Cultural Center.

Ask at the visitor center what farm tours are available.

Just returned from three days in Durango with kids 8 and 12. We went to Durango Mountain Resort and did the alpine slide there. Very fun but get there right when it opens or the lines become too long in the afternoon. Ziplining was one of the highlights for my kids. We went to the one that is in town. We rode the train to Silverton in the open car. Lots of fun. I made the right decision to take the bus back to Durango. Trip is shorter, kids fell asleep. I know the train ride back would have been too much train. The trail that follows the river in town is a great biking trail. We did that two afternoons.
