August 2007 Trip to Durango/SW Colorado

We are flying into Albuquerque, NM from Dallas on 8/4 and then renting a car and driving to Durango, with our departure being on 8/10 back to NM. Our desire is to stay in and/or around Durango (specifically the SW part of Colorado). Any advice/tips on the following would be greatly appreciated:

1) Good rental car company.

2) Reasonable ($100-150 per night) place to stay in and/or around Durango.

3) Places to eat in SW Colorado.

4) Activities to do and/or avoid - we are planning on doing the Silverton train ride and possibly going river rafting. We also are thinking of going to Mesa Verde.

The Durango/Silverton train is fun. I would take the bus back instead of taking the train roundtrip. Mesa Verde is a wonderful place to spend a day. There are hot springs just north of Durango at Trimble Hot Springs, or drive to Ouray or Pagosa. Also a jeep tour out of Silverton or Ouray would be fun.

Visit www.durango.org for more info and they also have package deals that may save some money on lodging and activities.

Places to eat in Durango: Mama's Boy, Gazpacho, Carvers, Steamworks, Ore House, Red Snapper, Sweeney's, Scoot n Blues.

We usually stay at the Doubletree which is a close walk to the train and downtown. The Holiday Inn is next door, also a close walk. The Residence Inn is a bit further away from downtown, but a 5 minute drive.

Leland House Bed and Breakfast is one block from Durango main drag and is delicious, comfortable and offers terrific service. My favorite activity, besides the train and rafting trip, is the Bar D Chuckwagon Dinner show.

I've stayed at the Durango Lodge. It's one block from the train station. It was comfy and cheap.

No, not "possibly going river rafting," but "definitely going river rafting." It was probably the most fun activity of our trip. Horseback riding was also fun, as well as the Bar-D Chuckwagon. Our kids even loved the fish hatchery at the north edge of downtown.
