Travel Plan

I am trying to plan 6 nights trip to Colorado. This is the high level plan for now and have not booked any hotels yet. Looking for your comments:

Day1: Alamosa -> Drive from Dallas to Alamosa. Stay over night.

Day2: Durango -> Visit Great Sand Dunes NP and head to Durango. Want to visit Mesa Verde NP if we have time left.

Day3: Durango -> Take the train ride to Silverton. Ride back by bus.

Day4: Denver -> Would like to take Million Dollar Hwy and visit Black Canyon NP on our way to Denver. Should we take this route? How long will it take?

Day5: Denver -> Visit Rocky Mountain NP.

Day6: Denver -> Visit Pike's peak. May be the Train ride.

Day7: Head back to Texas.

We have a 5 year and a 14 year old driving with us. We generally dont do lot of hiking and would like quick stops and drive in the NPs.

going to Durango the week b4 you, going to take the train up and the bus down also going to Trimble Springs for the waters. There will be 3 couples and we'll be staying at the Leland/Rochester House properties. Will let you know how it was upon our return. Should be a great stop for all of us!

Just got back from a shorter version of your planned trip

Mesa Verde was awesome

The train ride was worth every penny and we upgraded to the Silver Vista....much more comfortable than the cattle cars and you get a souvenir bag of goodies, food and drinks, and an unobstructed view. The bus ride back was hot and annoying....shorter though. Durango is a great little town and Silverton was cool too.

Didn't stop at Sand Dunes because I was told that I would need most or all of a day there. Didn't have time. Brand new Denver Art Museum, Museum of Nature and Science and Denver Zoo are all good options if you are DOING Denver. Garden of the Gods is a cool stop heading up to Pike's Peak. The Cog train up to the Peak is fun, but 2 trains?
