October visit to Denver

Visiting denver from wednesday october 9-sunday october 13th. looking for things to do while in town for the few days. We will have a rental car so we would like to take a day trip somewhere, maybe rocky mountain national park? We love exploring, hiking and checking out local restaurants. I'm just overwhelmed with information on the internet, just looking for a few ideas of activities we can add to our itinerary.

Do you like beer? That is the week of GABF, Great American Beer Festival, the Festival itself is sold out but there will be lots of other beer event going on. http://tinyurl.com/mrff76c

Where are you staying?

Maybe take a couple of day trips? One to RMNP (with a stop in Boulder on the way back - lots of great restaurants and fun shops on Pearl Street), and one more serious hiking trip somewhere down (up?) I-70 - stop by Idaho Springs along the way, see fall colors start to change, maybe hit up a scenic byway (Guenella Pass is gorgeous): http://byways.org/explore/byways/2110

Also, visit State Capitol, see the Denver Art Museum, hit up some breweries or maybe go on a whiskey tour:

go to the South Pearl street for brunch, then spend some time in Washington Park

Shopping at Cherry Creek..

Restaurants ~ Some of my current favorites are Sushi Den, Tag, Linger, Root Down...I could eat at Pinche Tacos every night....

Rocky Mountain National Park is a great place to visit in early to mid-October. What you want to do there may depend on Trail Ridge Road. The average official closing date for Trail Ridge Road is October 23. It often closes before that date or has temporary closures due to weather. Trail Ridge Road will be open at least to Many Parks Curve weather permitting. Trail Ridge Road status line is 970-586-1222.

If TRR is entirely open, then make the loop trip from Denver or you might want to consider an overnight stay in Estes Park or Grand Lake. Many places drop to lower season rates by that time of year. Elk rut will be slowing down but it is a great time to see wildlife in RMNP.

Along this route shortly after entering the Fall River Entrance to RMNP, take the short detour to the Alluvial Fan in Endovalley. It is a .2 mile walk to Horseshoe Falls. There are numerous short trails and overlooks along Trail Ridge Road. You need to add 2 hours to the driving time just to stop and get out at all the overlooks. The Alpine Visitor Center will probably be closed.

Another option is to do this Rocky In a Day itinerary. You would take the same route (Boulder/Boulder Canyon/Nederland) to Estes Park. Moraine Park museum mentioned in the itinerary will be closed. You could do this itinerary whether Trail Ridge Road was open all the way or not.

For your return to Denver, this route goes through very colorful and pretty South St. Vrain Canyon.
