4 day trip - suggestions please

Wife and I (mid 40s) have Wednesday evening to Sunday evening starting from Denver and need to return to DIA Sunday evening. Recommendations please on best route based on

- We love to drive scenic routes

- We do not want to stop and hike, raft or horseback

- We would like to stay in smaller towns where center has some character

- We are happy to stop different place each night

Recommendations appreciated - thank you

One option:

Leave Denver Thurs am, drive through Estes Park to Granby (US 36 to US34), staying in Granby Thurs and Fri nights. Day trips through Rocky Mtn Nat'l park on Friday . Sat drive through Hot Sulfur Springs to Breckenridge staying in Breck Sat. (US 40 to CO Hwy 9) Sun drive Breck through Bailey to Denver (hwy 9 to us 285).

Thanks for stating the info about the type of trip you are looking for. One more question...you said you have Wednesday evening, but about when is your arrival? I'm trying to get a sense of how far you might want to go on your first evening.

Here's a similar question where one of our DEs posts some mapquest routes for seeing a lot of scenery in a short time.

You could even make a larger loop to include some of the very scenic Southwest Colorado, since you mainly want to drive. For visitors who want to include more stops and activities, 4 days would be pushing it a little but for "scenic drivers" it is doable, covering lots of scenic roads each day.

Wed eve: drive to Buena Vista

Thursday: to Pagosa Springs via Lake City, Creede, South Fork. This route takes you over parts of the Collegiate Peaks scenic byway and the Silver Thread Scenic Byway

Friday: through Durango to Silverton and Ouray or through Mancos>Dolores>Telluride>Ridgway>Ouray. (San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway loop)

Sat: Montrose (rim drive at Black Canyon of the Gunnison Natl Park?) to Redstone>Aspen>Independence Pass>Leadville or Breckenridge

Sun: Mt. Evans drive, then back to Denver

Or..

Wed: Buena Vista or Salida

Thurs: Gunnison>Montrose (Black Canyon) > Ouray >Telluride

Friday: Telluride> Durango> Silverton >Ouray

Saturday: Ridgway>Montrose>Delta>Hotchkiss>Redstone>Aspen>Twin Lakes> Leadville or Breckenridge

Sunday: Mt. Evans, then Denver

Or, if you want to include the drive through Rocky Mtn Natl Park...

Wed. Estes Park

Thurs. Trail Ridge Road to Grand Lake, then to Redstone

Friday. McClure Pass, to Delta>Montrose>Ouray or Telluride

Sat. Durango to either Manitou Springs, Breckenridge, or Frisco

Sun. Denver

Lots of options and for beautiful scenery and picturesque small towns, you can hardly go wrong with any of them.

Some links you might find helpful:

When planning your route, keep in mind that Hwy 24 north of Leadville is closed at this time due to a collapsed old railroad tunnel that created a hole near the roadway.

Ouray is BEAUTIFUL. Make sure you stop at the Orvis Hot Springs (it's clothing optional, but we went at night, no problems, everybody is chill and minds their own business). If you don't want to spend the whole trip driving, at least hit up Trail Ridge Road, especially if you're staying in Denver. I think it's the highest paved road in the US? The views are stunning, and its more than likely you'll see wildlife on the way up and at the summit, which is a great place for a picnic, romantic cuddle, anything!

Phank you. Plan is leave Denever early Thursday - drive via Leadville to Buena Vista to Gunnison to Ouray and spend first night there (or should we go through Beckenridge rather than Leadville). Drive next day and spend Friday evening in Durango and then drive Saturday to Colorado Springs. Should we miss Co Springs and fit in Trail Rd at start of trip rather - thanks

I'd choose Trail Ridge, personally, but that's totally up to you. If you're in Ouray, make sure to drive the Million Dollar Highway!
