Crested Butte vs Mt. Crested Butte

Are these two different locations? What is the difference? Is it better to stay in one area rather then the other? Thank you.

Crested Butte is the town and Mt. Crested Butte is the ski resort which is located about a mile up the road from Crested Butte - the town. The town itself consists of about 4 blocks of restaurants and shops. There is bus service to and from main street to the ski lifts. I, personally, like the town of Crested Butte, because I enjoy being able to walk along the shops and restaurants (but this is during the beautiful summer days when it's warm). There are some fabulous B&B's and a great youth hostel in Crested Butte. Stop by Camp Four for delicious coffee or the Paradise Cafe for some yummy waffles.

Mt. Crested Butte is the downhill skiing portion with the lodging one would expect for a mountain ski resort. Crested Butte is more the cross-country skiing portion in addition to being a real town with buildings from the gold rush days. They are very close but very different.

Yeah, it really just depends on what you prefer. We go every year and stay in town, but we don't ski everyday. Somedays we go snow mobiling or just hang out and shop. If you want a ski resort, stay on the mountain, if you want a quite and friendly mountain town with access to the ski resort, stay in town. Both have great places to stay, it really just depends on the atmosphere you prefer.
