How close to Vail, which is about an 1 1/2 hour drive from Denver? F.Y.I., Aspen is nowhere close to Vail, but is significantly west and not on the main highwy I-70, which cuts through the state. Aspen is about a 3 1/2 hour drive from Denver, give or take, weather, etc. Do you want to be as far out as Summit County, where Breckenridge, Copper and Keystone are, or closer to Denver?
We live here in Evergreen, about 35 miles west of Denver in the foothills, off I-70, a jumping point to Summit County (another hour or so). If this type of location interests you, Evergreen is a really pretty mountain town, upscale, with a "downtown" street with pretty good restaurants/galleries/shops etc. We have a wonderful B&B here which actually won an award from Sunset magazine last year for being a nice place. It is set along a mountain stream and usually is surrounded by elk, walking distance to downtown Evergreen, and is called Highland Haven Creekside Inn (I think www.highlandhaven.com, but not positive). Our best restaurant in Evergreen IMHO is Saigon Landing for Vietnamese food, but in NYC you've had the best of the best.
Have fun wherever you end up!
